ANNIE’S SECOND DAY AT FOREST SCHOOL

Do not know, then do not love. But the first look can also make us fall in love or not. Maybe that’s the way with the newcomer COP Borneo, Annie. Perhaps this is the first time to see other orangutans after three years of living with humans. Perhaps also his fading memory of his mother made him challenge Happi when he first met. It’s sad to imagine what happened three years ago, when Annie had to be separated from his mother forever.

Annie a 4-year-old male orangutan, for the first time attending a COP Borneo forest school class on May 28, 2018. Annie strikes Happi on the first day of school, and during the day, Annie is oppressed by Happi and Owi, until he gives up and dares not be far from animal keeper who always tried to protect Annie from the two male orangutans who first entered the forest school class. The ability to climb no more than 3 meters. Perhaps this is the highest climbing of Annie after parting with his mother.

The oppression of new students is not continuous. After the first day of the evaluation, the COP Borneo orangutan rehabilitation team decided to keep Annie to a forest school with Happi and Owi. Of course, the animal keeper will be more alert. “What a surprise. Happi started a good relationship with Annie. They stared and climbed the same tree.”, said Wety Rupiana while noting in Annie’s special forest schoolbook. “It turns out yesterday is the day of introduction.”, added Wety relieved. (LSX)

(WET)

WAITING FOR THE DECISION OF THE ORANGUTAN DEATH CASE WITH 130 BULLETS

Compiled data from 8 orangutan organizations recorded that at least 48 cases of orangutans shot with air rifles and a total of 805 bullets. This small, 4.5 mm air rifle bullet, made of tin cannot kill orangutans directly. But the number and location of the bullet can make it the main cause of death for all animals.

The case of an orangutan’s death with 130 air rifle bullets on February 6, 2018, has entered the third trial. Sangatta District Court in East Kalimantan has also heard the defense of the suspect.

After a long holiday of Eid Fitr, Sangatta District Court will decide the verdict on the four suspects of the orangutan shooting with 130 air rifle bullets. “Let’s keep on guarding the case so that the verdict is given according to their actions,” told Ramadhani, the COP manager of habitat and orangutan protection.

UNYIL, ONE MORE STEP TOWARDS HIS HABITAT

Unyil is the name of one of orangutans in orangutan rehabilitation centre located in Berau regency, East Kalimantan. Unyil has his own story that is quite unbelievable. This young orangutan which once kept as pet by locals in Muara Wahau, was living in a bathroom for 3 years. He was only 2 years old at that time.. still a cute and adorable baby. He was bought by Ngau family for IDR 1.500.000,00 from others.

“We didn’t expect that unyil’s progress would be that fast. From a spoiled baby orangutan which had to be fed by Ngau family to eat, even we were surprised seeing his hair straight as if his hair was just straighten. The first time he joined the forest school, he was just shuffling on the ground and confused when he was given orangutan food. Until finally, he successfully climbed the trees and moved from one tree to another. And his courage to survive on the orangutan island convinced us that Unyil deserves the real forest.”, said Reza Kurniawan, COP primate observer.

The release of orangutans is not as easy as people think it is, like just open the transit cage and let the orangutan free. There are a very detailed medical test to ensure the orangutan is in a good condition of health without any infectious disease. Therefore, COP Borneo medical team carried out a series of medical check-up which included a complete blood test, and several infectious diseases tests such as hepatitis, herpes, and tuberculosis.

Thankfully, laboratory results state that Unyil is clear. Unyil prepares for the next step, waiting for administration from the authorities to release him to his habitat. (SAR)

BULLIYING ON THE FIRST DAY OF ANNIE

Geez … at the beginning of the class of COP Borneo forest school, East Kalimantan, one participant has made a riot. Annie, the newcomer looked at Happi fiercely. Not only Happi, Annie also showed an attitude of unfriendly to Owi. Owi even got a hit from Annie on the way to the forest school.

But once in the forest school, the situation becomes turned 180 degrees. Annie who always wanted to challenge Happi and Owi could not do much. Happi always tried to bite and pursue Annie, wherever Annie went. Owi did not want to lose. The first day of school became more and more difficult for Annie.

The forest school has lasted half a day. Animal keeper is busy continuously separating Annie and Happi fights. Annie also looked very tired and wanted to give up. But Happi continued to approach Annie and invite a fight. Maybe this is a welcome statement to Annie from Happi. (WET)

Hari pertama sekolah menjadi semakin sulit buat Annie.

(WET)
