APE GUARDIANS RAN FRANTICALLY

Monitoring or observing orangutan activities after the release of Untung and Unyil this time, really made the team almost gave up. These two orangutans have made the monitoring team run in chaos. We call this team the APE Guardian team.

When the release, APE Guardian team for Untung first informed us that Untung’s cage had been opened. Only 420 meters away, the APE Guardian for Unyil team gave a signal, Unyil’s cage was ready to be opened. As predicted earlier, both Untung and Unyil ran towards the tree and climbed it. But not long after that, Untung climbed down and began chasing. As soon as possible, the monitoring team and even the transporting cage carriers ran away from Untung.

“It’s normal for orangutans who have undergone the rehabilitation process to still follow humans. They only need to go through adaptation again in a new environment, where humans are no longer friends, but something they must avoid. “, Said Reza Kurniawan, a primatologist at the Center for Orangutan Protection.

The APE Guardian team worked hard to avoid Untung and Unyil. Including jumping into a creek with depths of more than 1 meter. Of course they hoped that these two orangutans would be reluctant to chase. “Damn, they are not afraid of water,” said Yusak, one of the rangers.

Already soaked in the creek, still we have to run because of being chased by orangutans. The sky began to darken, Untung and Unyil seemed tired of playing chases. Unyil climbed into the tree and soon no visible movement from him, but Untung was still playing on the ground even though he was no longer chasing. “Monitoring these two orangutans is really physical draining.” (EBO)

APE GUARDIAN LARI KALANG KABUT

Hanya berjarak 420 meter, tim APE Guardian orangutan Unyil memberi aba-aba, kandang Unyil siap dibuka.

(WID)

WHEN BABY BITES LANDED SMOOTHLY (1)

Bitten by an orangutan baby? How does it feel? Babies are cute, cute and adorable. Are you sure???

There are currently 9 orangutan babies at the Borneo COP Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, Berau, East Kalimantan. Orangutan babies have physical and behavioral characteristics similar to human babies. The difference is that orangutan babies have 10 teeth when they are one year old, including canines. You can imagine when they want to play or feel disturbed and do biting actions, right?

Baby orangutan bites landed smoothly on your skin, this commonly experienced by baby sitters and medical team. Usually, new baby orangutans enter the quarantine cage for the first time. This is an orangutan baby self-defence mechanism.

Orangutan babies experienced past trauma before arriving at the rehabilitation center, when they were forced to escape from their mothers. It could be that the mother was brutally murdered before their eyes. In fact, the orangutan mothers will not part with their children before their children are ready to live their own lives in the forest. The child is separated from the mother when she or he is 6-8 years old. (EBO)

SAAT GIGITAN BAYI MENDARAT DENGAN MULUS (1)

Tergigit bayi orangutan? Bukan tergigit tapi digigit bayi orangutan. Gimana rasanya? Bayi kan lucu, imut dan menggemaskan. Yakin???

(FLO)

ROOM MAKE UP FOR ORANGUTAN

Since the block enclosure was established in 2015 and inhabited by Ambon and Memo, it has never been repainted. Small repairs such as for broken bars or cage floor damage have been carried out periodically. Now, the room make up team will work to improve any defects for the orangutan’s cage.

Limited number of enclosures require continuous planning. When the medical team is ready for their job to check orangutan’s health in this block, the animal keepers prepare for painting, hammock repairs and inspection of the cage. Orangutans prepare to move rooms.

The room make up team who are none other than tireless workers at COP Borneo are ready to sand, paint and make sure the rooms are ready to be occupied. Giving disinfectants is a signal, Ambon the orangutan is welcome to occupy his new room.

“Amazing room make up team!” Hopefully team will always be in good health to able to give new colors to other orangutan rooms. (EBO)

Pemberian disinfektan menjadi isyarat, orangutan Ambon dipersilahkan menempati kamar barunya.

“Tim bedah kamar yang luar biasa!”. Semoga tim sehat terus agar selalu bisa memberi warna baru di kamar-kamar orangutan lainnya. (FLO)

VISIT TO SCHOOL OF MENTARI CENGKARENG

COP school visits are usually held in the morning. But this time the schedule is 2 pm at Mentari school Cengkareng. Responding the invitation from the school, the COP team attended a sharing session on orangutan on Monday, April 29 2019.

Around 180 7-11 grade students gathered in the mini hall and all participants sat on the floor. They were very enthusiastic about the event. They were amazed by the facts presented, especially the threats faced by orangutans and other wildlife. The role of orangutans as a key species in maintaining the health and sustainability of forests also makes them believe that orangutans should  be in their natural habitat. As a gardener of the forest, they keep the ecosystem balanced. This session lasted 1 hour and a half which was filled with presentations and questions and answers.

After the event, Mr. Haris as the coordinator of the activities from the Mentari School spoke with the COP team that they wanted to hold a performance with an environmental theme, more specifically orangutan. “We now have a picture of where we want to donate,” said Pak Haris. Hopefully this collaboration continues, sir! (EBO)

Sebagai gardener of the forest, mereka menjaga ecosystem tetap seimbang.

(EBO)

AMBON WEIGHS 69 KG NOW

Who owns a body weight of almost 70 kg at the Borneo COP orangutan rehabilitation center? That weight of course does not belong to orangutan children who are attending forest school classes. That’s like an adult’s weight. This must belong to an adult orangutan. Who is he? Or maybe it’s an animal keeper!

His handsome face is often admired by many people. It shows his dignity but unfortunately must end up in a cage. Dreams still continue, taking him to an island, where he can freely climb, choose the foods he wants to eat or explore in limited ways.

All know him as the cool Ambon. His eyes always stared pleasantly. His cheek pad often makes anyone who first approaches him back off. With his big body and long hair, we can feel his dominance from a distance.

Today, Ambon underwent an annual health check. Its weight is recorded again. “With the current weight, Ambon looks more agile. Hopefully Ambon will have the opportunity to return to the orangutan island, “said vet Flora, full of hope. (EBO)

BOBOT AMBON SEKARANG 69 KG

Siapakah pemilik berat badan 70 kg kurang 1 kg di pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo? Berat segitu, pastinya bukan milik anak-anak orangutan yang sedang mengikuti kelas sekolah hutan. Itu seperti berat badan seorang dewasa. Ini pasti milik orangutan dewasa. Siapakah dia? Jangan-jangan miliknya animal keeper!

Wajah tampannya sering dikagumi banyak orang.

Flora penuh harapan. (FLO)

IUCN CALLS FOR A MORATORIUM ON PROJECTS IMPACTING THE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED TAPANULI ORANGUTAN

IUCN is deeply concerned about ongoing and new threats to the Critically Endangered Tapanuli orangutan in Sumatra, Indonesia. IUCN therefore calls for the development and adoption of a conservation management plan for the Tapanuli orangutan based on an independent, objective Population and Habitat Viability Assessment before any projects potentially impacting the species advance any further.

IUCN also calls for the establishment of connecting corridors between the three forest blocks to which the species is confined, by converting 8,077 hectares from the ‘Non-forest’ to the ‘Conservation Forest’ land use category. Until then, further development of projects with an impact on the habitat and viability of the Tapanuli orangutan should be put under a moratorium.

The Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), described in 2017, is the first new great ape species to be discovered since the 1920s. Pongo tapanuliensis has evolved separately from other orangutan species for 670,000 years. Wholly confined to the Batang Toru Ecosystem, a mountainous tract of rainforest in the province of North Sumatra, it occupies an area of about 1,420 square kilometres. With an estimated population of fewer than 800, the Tapanuli orangutan is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. It is the rarest great ape species in the world. The relatively small population size makes the species especially vulnerable to extinction, as any loss of habitat or disturbance could make the population too small to remain viable.

Although large parts of the ecosystem are classified as ‘Protection Forest’, some critical sections of the Tapanuli orangutan’s range are still open to development, including energy infrastructure, mining and logging. Little is known about the Tapanuli orangutan’s life cycle and in particular its resilience to disturbance, and it is imperative that any activity that could potentially lead to the degradation of its habitat and direct threats to the population is carefully assessed and all measures taken to avoid any impact. Where knowledge of potential impacts is insufficient, the precautionary approach requires that impacts are studied and fully understood before any developments are licensed.

IUCN wishes to highlight that, with political will, conservation of great ape species is not only possible but can act as a major boost to local economies and livelihoods. There are several parallels between the situation facing the Tapanuli orangutan and the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) in Eastern Africa. Over two decades of proactive, community-based conservation has seen this sub-species of the Eastern Gorilla increase by at least 50%, and Rwanda alone is now generating USD 200 million annually from eco-tourism, a large proportion of which is built around gorilla trekking.

IUCN stands ready to support Indonesia’s government agencies and financial institutions committed to prevent the extinction of the Tapanuli orangutan.

ALOUISE’S FIRST DAY AT THE FOREST SCHOOL

Alouise is an orangutan who recently entered the Borneo COP orangutan rehabilitation center on March 9, 2019. After going through a quarantine period of two months and the results of his medical examinations were good, Alouise was finally scheduled to enter the forest school class.

This was the first day Alouise entered the Borneo COP forest school. Early in the morning there was the first challenge. “Bringing out Alouise from her cage is not an easy thing. He is still wild and always bites when held. The struggle of the three animal keepers in 15 minutes is quite sweaty. This morning is just the beginning, “said Jhonny.

Alouise’s fear was still visible, all the way to jungle school, he hugged tightly, very tightly. Slowly orangutan Annie approached him when Alouise arrived at the forest school. Annie tugged him, invited him to play but Alouise got more afraid and embraced Herlina.

When Annie was a bit slack, Alouise suddenly held on to the tree and climbed it. Alouise climbed quickly without looking down again, and stopped at a height of 25 meters. “It’s a pleasure to see Alouise climb his first 25 meters,” Herlina said. “But how do we take him down?” She said again anxiously.

As the afternoon approached, Alouise still didn’t want to come down. The sky is very cloudy, the rain will come down soon. Nearly an hour we waited, finally with a papaya bait, Alouise climbed down. “Thank God, I don’t have to climb the tree,” Jhonny said again. (EBO)

“Senang sekali melihat Alouise memanjat 25 meter pertamanya.”, ujar Herlina. “Tapi bagaimana kami membawanya turun?” ujarnya lagi dengan was-was.

Saat sore menjelang, Alouise belum mau turun. Langit mendung sekali, hujan akan segera turun. Hampir satu jam kami menunggu, akhirnya dengan pancingan buah pepaya, akhirnya Alouise pun turun. “Syukurlah ngak mesti manjat pohon .”, ujar Jhonny lagi. (WET)

APE DEFENDER TAKES CARE OF A GIBBON’S WOUND

This male gibbon has been in the cage of BKSDA SKW I Berau for almost two years. Surprising reports of increasing injuries in his left thigh area made the COP Borneo medical team immediately adjust the schedule of visits. Friday night, April 12, 2019 the APE Defender team examined the gibbon.

From the results of the interim examination, the following day vet Satria anesthetized the gibbon and began cleaning the wound. Many tissues experience necrosis and there is no external bleeding. The wound starts to rot and the peculiar smell of pus indicates that the infection has sharply smelled. The left thigh wound is finally operated on minor to cover the wound. While the wound in the buttocks is treated because it does not allow for surgery.

After evaluating the position of the cage that is too close to the bear cage, the gibbon cage is finally removed under the sapodilla tree but still gets sunlight to avoid humidity at the cage so the wounds are always dry. (EBO)

APE DEFENDER MERAWAT LUKA OWA

GOOD BYE UNTUNG AND UNYIL!

When both of the transport cage doors are lifted, the two orangutans come out and reach for the nearest tree to climb. Untung and Unyil returned to their habitat and have overwhelmed the APE Guardian COP team.

Thursday, April 11, 2019 is still nine days to commemorate Earth Day. Two orangutans were released by East Kalimantan BKSDA, Dipterokarpa and Center for Orangutan Protection in Berau, East Kalimantan. A number of invited guests from the Berau Environmental Office, OWT, Kelay Koramil and Lesan Dayak Chief participated in witnessing the release this time. Luckily, the APE Guardian COP team immediately evacuated guests to leave the release site. “Untung suddenly came down from the tree and chased the team that was carrying an empty transport cage. We immediately ran away. “, Said Hery Susanto, while catching his breath. It turned out that the sound of the transport cage was enough to disturb Untung, which made Untung turned around and chased them.

While Unyil’s cage was opened by Mr. Aganto Seno from KSDA SKW I Berau. Unyil, who was worried to approach the team, was the opposite. Immediately he climbed the tree and move from one tree to another. The APE Guardian team that will monitor Unyil orangutans at their new home will keep their distance further because of Unyil’s habit to occasionally approach the team. Both are still monitored and are adapting to their new environment.

Releases have different stories  when the cage door is opened. “We believe, every wildlife has an instinct to survive. Rehabilitation efforts will never be in vain. The dream of returning to habitat is not just wishful thinking. Thank you for the support of all parties that have enabled each individual orangutan to return to their habitat, from rescue, rehabilitation to release. A better life for orangutans, “said Reza Kurniawan, Center for Orangutan Protection optimistically. (EBO)

Kamis, 11 April 2019 masih sembilan hari lagi peringatan Hari Bumi. Kami langsung lari tunggang langgang.”, ujar Hery Susanto sambil mengatur nafasnya kembali.
