On Thursday (23/6) BKSDA Sampit, Mangala Agni Sampit and the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP), evacuated 18 pangolin corpses (manis javanica) at JL. Housing Betang Kingdom, Sampit. The corpses were floating in shallow marshes, some were still wrapped in plastic, ready for sale. Most corpses were surrounded by maggots, some of them have even only skeletons. Evacuation is carried out at 9.30 pm. The corpses were also directly buried there. “The process of burial was quick, this should be done to anticipate the society to come.”, said one of the team of Mangala Agni.
According to Muriansyah, the commander of BKSDA Sampit, eighteenth corpses were reported by one of the residents around the site. “Someone has phoned me on Wednesday morning. He said that he saw a pile of cardboard boxes and smelt something bad like corpses at Jalan Perum Betang Kingdom. In wednesday morning, we sent a team of Mangala Agni to check the location and they found the corpses. ” explained him. He also explained that the eighteen corpses intentionally discarded by one of the collectors of pangolin meat in Sampit. He might have kept the them for a long time and and there was no buyer, so the meat started to rot. Seen from the size, the weight of the corpses are estimated approximately 4-5 kg. He also explained the price range of pangolin meat in Sampit. The price is 250.000 rupiah/ Kg. The price of the shell can reach up to 2-3 million / Kg. The price can greatly affect the manhunt of Pangolin in Sampit, particularly in East Kotawaringin in which the manhunt rate is very high.
“The case of this pangolin corpses finding is currently being reported into the Police Kutim. We have to wait then, “said Reza, a staff of COP who took part in the burial process. He also explained that, “the rate of hunting of protected wildlife Kutim is already high, considering that Sampit is one of the cities which have an access to other islands. This strongly causes the hunting of wild animals out of control.”, he said.
Previously, Pangolin is in the list of mammals that protected by the law in the Republic of Indonesia. As outlined in the annex of PP RI No. 7 1999 and in UU No 5 of 1990 that: Anyone who deliberately captures, injures, kills, keeps, possesses, maintains, transports, and sells or trades protected animals/wildlife alive or dead. (Article 21 paragraph (2)) shall be punished with 5 years imprisonment and a fine of 100 million rupiah (one hundred million rupiah) (Article 40 paragraph (2)).
BKSDA Sampit, Manggala Agni Pos Sampit dibantu Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP), mengevakusai 18 bangkai Trenggiling (manis javanica) yang berada dipinggir JL. Perumahan Betang Raya, Sampit, Kalimantan Tengah. Posisi bangkai mengapung di rawa-rawa dangkal, beberapa masih terbungkus rapi dalam kemasan plastik siap jual. Kondisi bangkai sebagian besar sudah dikerumuni belatung, bahkan ada yang hanya tinggal tulang belulang. Evakuasi ini dilakukan pada pukul 9.30 WIB. Bangkai-bangkai tadi langsung juga dikubur di tempat. “Proses penguburan berjalan dengan cepat, hal ini dilakukan untuk mengantisipasi ramainya masyarakat berdatangan.”, ujar salah satu tim Manggala Agni.
Bedasarkan penuturan Muriansyah selaku Komandan Pos BKSDA Sampit, kedelapan belas mayat ini dilaporkan oleh salah satu warga di sekitar lokasi. “Pas itu saya ditelpon dari salah seorang warga, pada Rabu dini hari. Bilangnya dia melihat tumpukan kardus dan bau busuk seperti bangkai di ruas jalan Perum Betang Raya. Rabu pagi kami turunkan tim Manggala Agni untuk kroscek lokasi dan menemukan bangkai-bangkai terebut.”, jelasnya.
Beliau juga menjelaskan bahwa diduga delapan belas bangkai ini sengaja dibuang oleh salah satu pengepul daging Trenggiling di Sampit. Karena sudah lama disimpan dan tidak ada pembeli, daging-daging mulai membusuk. Jika dilihat dari besarnya bangkai, kemungkinan beratnya kurang lebih 4-5 kg. Beliau juga menjelaskan kisaran harga daging Trenggiling di pasaran Sampit. Harganya Rp 250,00 per Kg. Kalau sisiknya sampai 2-3 Juta/Kg. Dengan pasaran harga ini sangat mempengarui faktor pemburuan Trenggiling di Sampit, Khususnya di Kotawaringin Timur sangat tinggi.
“Saat ini kasus penemuan bangkai Trenggiling sedang dimasukkan ke Polres Kotim. Untuk selanjutnya tinggal menungu penyelidikan lebih lanjut oleh pihak Polres Kotawaringin Timur.”, ungkap Reza salah satu staff COP yang ikut proses penguburan. Ia juga menjelaskan bahwa perburuan satwa liar dilindungi di Kotim sudah di level yang bisa dikatakan tinggi. Mengingat kota Sampit merupakan salah satu kota pelabuhan yang mempunyai jalur antar pulau. Hal ini sangat mendukung perburuan satwa-satwa liar sangat tidak terkendali.
Sebelumnya, Trenggiling termasuk satwa liar mamalia yang dilindungi Undang Undang Republik Indonesia. Sebagai mana tertuang dalam lampiran PP RI No. 7 tahung 1999 dan tertuang dalam UU No. 5 Tahun 1990 bahwa, “Barang siapa dengan sengaja menangkap, melukai, membunuh, menyimpan, memiliki, memelihara, mengangkut dan memperniagakan atau memperjualbelikan binatang/hewan yang dilindungi dalam keadaan hidup maupun mati (Pasal 21 ayat (2). Diancam dengan pidana penjara paling lama 5 tahun dan denda paling banyak Rp 100.000.000 rupiah (seratus juta rupiah) (Pasal 40 ayat (2).” (SAT)

Those two young orangutans have been chained when we found them in two separe places. The first one being chained onhis neck, and still, placed inside the wooden cage. The second one, being chained on his leg in the river bank. According to the local Wildlife Authority officer, the trend of illegal captivity of orangutans have been increasing since forest fires back in 2015. Most of them to make way for oil palm plantation.

Kedua bayi orangutan ini ditemukan dengan leher terikat, dimasukkan ke dalam kotak kayu. Satu bayi sakit di pergelangan kaki kirinya, kondisi buruk ini diperolehnya saat hidup dalam pemeliharaan dekat sungai dan sampah. Kedua bayi orangutan ditemukan sudah terpisah dengan induknya. Pemeliharaan orangutan illegal semakin banyak setelah kasus kebakaran hutan 2015 yang lalu. Ketersediaan luasan dan pakan sangat kurang, dimana hutan sudah beralih fungsi menjadi konsesi perkebunan sawit. APE Crusader menyelamatkan kedua bayi tersebut, tadi siang.

The APE Crusader Team rescued a two weeks baby from a local in Tumbang Koling village last night. We call him, APUNG. Just like human baby, he is still very weak. Just drink milk. If he drink too much, he started diarrhea. We took him to nearest Centre: BOS Nyarumenteng. Hope he can survive.
It been a week, this team patrolling in Central Kalimantan. The mission to spot the illegal captivity and to monitor the potential threat towards orangutan. At least 3 orangutans cases in our list now and also a big plan from a RSPO member to clear forest have been identified. Thanks to Orangutan Outreach as well as Georgina Stewart for supporting us.
Tim APE Crusader baru saja menyelamatkan satu bayi orangutan dari desa Tumbang Koling tadi malam. Seperti halnya bayi manusia yang masih sangat lemah, ia hanya minum susu. Jika terlalu banyak dia mulai mencret. Kami membawanya ke pusat penyelamatan terdekat: BOS Nyarumenteng. Semoga dia bisa bertahan hidup.
Sudah seminggu ini Tim APE Crusader berada di Kalimantan Tengah dalam perjalanan patroli rutinnya. Sudah ada beberapa informasinya orangutan yang dipelihara illegal oleh masyarakat setempat dan juga rencana – rencana pembabatan hutan yang akan dilakukan oleh perusahaan kelapa sawit. Another orangutan just rescued yesterday from a local in Sampit District, Central Kalimantan by the APE Crusader Team and Wildlife Authority (BKSDA). Sampit is the deadliest spot for orangutan as the direct impact of the forest clearing to make for oil palm plantation.
Parjan, this young boy have been kept illegally by Ibu Natun for about 2 years. She found him alone, without mother, in her farm. Parjan, have been treated just like human baby. As he is growing bigger and stronger, he started causing troubles in neighbourhood.
Thanks to the Orangutan Outreach for funding the APE Crusader Team. More than 100 orangutans have been treated since its inception in 2008.

“Stop Palm Oil!”, said Paulinus Kristanto. “April 16, 2016 COP found one (1) baby orangutan using old nest. At the same time, COP found one (1) adult orangutan walking on the ground in Palma Serasih’s oil palm plantation.”, he explained.
“The location where we found the orangutan was a fragmented forest. Orangutan will be more pressured because their living space is getting narrower. They could die of starvation, be killed by workers of the plantation because it is considered as pest, be killed by local people because they endanger the safety or be killed by traditional hunters to be eaten or to be sold.

“Stop Sawit!”, tegas Paulinus Kristanto. “16 April 2016 COP menemukan 1 (satu) anak orangutan yang menggunakan sarang lama. Pada saat yang bersamaan, COP menemukan 1 (satu) orangutan dewasa yang berjalan di tanah perkebunan sawit Palma Serasih.”, jelasnya.
“Lokasi tempat ditemukan kedua orangutan tersebut merupakan kawasan berhutan yang sudah sangat terfragmentasi. Orangutan akan semakin terdesak karena ruang hidupnya semakin sempit. Mereka bisa mati kelaparan, tewas dibunuh pekerja sawit karena dianggap hama, dibunuh masyarakat setempat karena dianggap membahayakan keselamatan dan atau dibunuh pemburu tradisional untuk dimakan atau diambil bayinya untuk dijual.

Today, Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) published the latest conditions : The fate of orangutans affected by deforestation for oil palm plantations allegedly committed by PT. AE in East Kalimantan. There are some important things in the report:

COP found one (1) baby orangutan in an old nest. At the same time, COP found one (1) adult orangutan walking on the oil palm plantation. Both were found on April16, 2016 between 17:00 to 17:30 in a fragmented forest.
The forests seem to be fragmented through clearing and burning process. Thus, the orangutan will be increasingly pressured because their living space more is getting narrower. They would starve to death, be killed by workers of the plantation because they are considered as pests, be killed by local people because they endanger the safety, or be killed by traditional hunters to be eaten or sold.

This report reinforces the previous reports submitted by COP on March 10, 2016, with reference number 06/HQ-03/COP/2016. The report mentions that 13 (thirteen) orangutans were threatened. The report has been followed up by the BKSDA Kaltim, Secretariat of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), The Forest Trust (TFT), Golden Agri Resources (GAR) and Gawi Plantation. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Agriculture, Palm Oil Association Indonesia (GAPKI) and the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil decided to cover this crime by ignoring the report from COP. Counterproductive action was taken by PT AE by providing information that suggests that there is nothing wrong with the company’s operations and orangutans in its concession. Other action that is more counterproductive is to bribe the media Bisnis Indonesia to release a unilateral opinion. COP deplores the attitude of PT. AE suggesting that the effort taken by COP is a kind of Black Campaign in the palm oil industry. PT. AE should be focus to resolve the problem with the orangutans. It will build a good
image for national palm oil industry.

“BKSDA Kaltim should be proactive to deal with these cases so that victims (orangutan) can be prevented early. The Ministry of Forestry should learn from the previous cases that the lack of law enforcement has led to more casualties (orangutan). 5 Orangutan rescue center in Borneo Orangutan with more than 2000 orangutans is a valid proof on manmade disaster caused by irresponsible palm oil industry.”.

“PT AE should admit their mistakes and focus to find a solution so that
orangutans could be saved. Irresponsible palm oil companies like PT AE
affects the image of the palm oil industry company. COP believes that TFT
and RSPO will eagerly help PT. AE to grow into a company that is friendly
towards orangutans and forests.”.

ORANGUTAN MENGHITUNG MUNDUR KEMATIAN DI KEBUN SAWIT PT. AE

Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) pada hari ini mempublikasikan kondisi terkini : nasib orangutan yang terdampak pembabatan hutan untuk membuka perkebunan kelapa sawit yang diduga dilakukan oleh PT. AE di Kalimantan Timur. Ada beberapa hal penting dalam laporan tersebut, yakni: 

COP menemukan 1 (satu) anak orangutan yang menggunakan sarang lama. Pada saat yang bersamaan, COP menemukan 1 (satu) orangutan dewasa yang berjalan di tanah perkebunan sawit. Keduanya ditemukan pada tanggal 16 April 2016 jam 17.00 – 17.30. Lokasi tempat ditemukan ke dua orangutan tersebut merupakan kawasan berhutan yang sudah sangat terfragmentasi. 
Hutan – hutan yang terfagmentasi tersebut nampak dalam proses dibabat dan dibakar. Dengan demikian, orangutan akan semakin terdesak karena ruang hidupnya semakin sempit. Mereka bisa mati kelaparan, tewas dibunuh pekerja sawit karena dianggap hama, dibunuh masyarakat setempat karena dianggap membahayakan keselamatan dan atau dibunuh pemburu tradisional untuk dimakan atau diambil bayinya untuk dijual. 

Laporan ini menguatkan laporan COP sebelumnya yang dikirimkan pada tanggal 10 Maret 2016 dengan nomor surat 06/HQ-03/COP/2016. 13 (tiga belas) orangutan dilaporkan terancam dalam laporan tersebut. Laporan tersebut sudah ditindaklanjuti oleh Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA) Kaltim, Sekretariat Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) , The Forest Trust (TFT), Golden Agri Resources (GAR) dan Gawi Plantation. Sayangnya, Kementerian Pertanian, Gabungan Pengusaha Kelapa Sawit Indonesia (GAPKI) dan Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil memilih untuk melindungi kejahatan ini dengan mengabaikan laporan COP. Tindakan kontraproduktif malah diambil pihak PT AE dengan memberikan keterangan yang mengesankan bahwa tidak ada yang salah dengan operasional perusahaan dan orangutan di kawasan konsesinya. Tindakan kontraproduktif lainnya adalah dengan membayar media Bisnis Indonesia untuk memuat opini sepihaknya. COP menyesalkan sikap PT. AE yang mensankan bahwa upaya COP adalah Black Campaign pada industri kelapa sawit. Sudah seharusnya PT. AE fokus menyelesaikan masalahnya dengan orangutan. Ini akan membangun citra yang baik bagi industri kelapa sawit nasional.

“BKSDA Kaltim hendaknya proaktif dalam menangani kasus ini agar korban orangutan bisa dicegah lebih dini. Sudah seharusnya Kementerian Kehutanan belajar dari kasus – kasus sebelumnya bahwa nihilnya penegakan hukum telah menyebabkan korban orangutan terus berjatuhan. 5 Pusat Penyelamatan Orangutan di Kalimantan dengan 2000 lebih orangutannya adalah bukti yang valid atas bencana buatan industri kelapa sawit yang tidak bertanggung jawab.” 

“Sebaiknya PT AE mengakui saja kesalahannya dan fokus ke solusi sehingga orangutan dapat diselamatkan. Yang merusak citra industri kelapa sawit adalah perusahaan – perusahaan tak bertanggung jawab seperti PT AE inilah. COP yakin, TFT dan RSPO akan bersemangat membantu perusahaan PT. AE untuk tumbuh menjadi perusahaan yang ramah orangutan dan ramah hutan.”

Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) are urging the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to summon all of their power to save the 13 orangutans trapped in AE Corporation’s land in East Kutai, East Kalimantan. The pressure has been put on the Ministry through a demonstration in the lobby and grounds of the Ministry building in Jakarta. COP Activists wore orangutan costumes.

COP greatly appreciates the response from the East Kalimantan Conservation and National Resources Agency. The report was submitted on the 10th of March 2016, and immediately followed up with a field visit on the 20th – 21st March 2016. In this visit, although the team did not encounter the orangutans directly, four nests were sighted. This is an indication that there are indeed orangutans present on the land. With letter number S 330 / BKSDA – 1.4/2014, The Conservation and Natural Resources Agency (BKSDA) recommended that AE Corporation take an active role in the rescue efforts of protected wildlife within the plantation area, and other areas in which wildlife has been affected due to the presence of AE Corporation.

COP deems this recommendation to be insufficient. More proactive tangible actions are needed, as AE Corporation continues to publicly deny the presence of the trapped orangutans, through both media publications and official reports given to the Conservation and Natural Resources Agency and forwarded to various other parties.

Ramadhani, COP Managing Director gave the following statement:

“The denial from AE Corporation is an indication of bad faith. AE Corporation refuse to acknowledge their wrongdoings, which is dangerous to the orangutans that remain on their land. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry should not just blindly trust in the reports given by AE Corporation.”

“The Ministry must act quickly to send out a rescue team to help these orangutans, and an investigation team to uncover their crimes. Tolerance of cases like this in the past have sacrificed orangutans as a result of the expansion of palm oil plantations. At least 2000 orangutans have been evacuated to 5 Orangutan Rescue Centres in Kalimantan and this atrocity continues on. The main cause is the lack of firm actions against it, particularly from a legal perspective.”

“The eyes of the international palm oil industry are currently on this case. Golden Agri Resources (GAR) and Wings Food have confirmed that they have temporarily suspended their trading agreement with PS Group, the parent organisation of AE Corporation. Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) have also responded swiftly to this case. AE Corporations denial will only worsen the situation. Firmness from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will improve the image of the international palm oil industry, which will ultimately have a positive impact on the national economy.”

13 ORANGUTAN TERJEBAK DI KEBUN SAWIT PT AE, KLHK HARUS TINDAK TEGAS

Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) mendesak Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (LHK) untuk mengerahkan segenap potensi untuk menyelamatkan 13 orangutan yang terjebak dalam kawasan konsesi PT. AE di Kutai Timur, Kalimantan Timur. Desakan disampaikan dalam demonstrasi di lobi gedung dan halaman Kementerian Kehutanan di Jakarta. Para aktivis COP mengenakan kostum orangutan. 

COP sangat mengapresiasi respon Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA) Kalimantan Timur. Laporan yang disampaikan pada tanggal 10 Maret 2016 langsung ditanggapi dengan kunjungan lapangan pada tanggal 20 – 21 Maret 2016. Dalam kunjungan tersebut, meskipun tim tidak berjumpa langsung dengan orangutan namun tim menemukan 4 sarang orangutan. Ini adalah indikasi kuat keberadaan orangutan. Melalui surat nomor S 330 / BKSDA -1.4/2014, BKSDA merekomendasikan PT AE untuk berperan aktif dalam upaya penyelamatan satwa dilindungi yang berada di areal kebun dan areal berdampak bagi satwa sebagai akibat keberadaan PT. AE. 

COP menilai bahwa rekomendasi tersebut tidak cukup. Diperlukan tindakan prokatif yang lebih nyata mengingat PT AE terus melakukan penyangkalan atas keberadaan orangutan yang terjebak. Penyangkalan dilakukan melalui publikasi di media maupun surat resmi ke BKSDA dan ditembuskan ke berbagai pihak. 

Ramadhani, Direktur Pelaksana COP memberikan pernyataan: 

“Penyangkalan yang dilakukan oleh PT AE merupakan indikasi itikad tidak baik. PT AE terkesan tidak mau mengakui kesalahan yang telah dibuat dan ini membahayakan orangutan yang tersisa di kawasan konsesi mereka. Tidak seharusnya KLHK mempercayai begitu saja laporan – laporan yang disampaikan oleh PT. AE” 

“Kementerian LH&K harus bergerak cepat menerjunkan tim rescue untuk menolong orangutan dan tim penyidik untuk mengungkap kejahatan ini. Pembiaran atas kasus – kasus serupa telah mengakibatkan korban orangutan akibat ekspansi perkebunan kelapa sawit terus berjatuhan. Setidaknya 2000 orangutan terpaksa dievakuasi ke 5 Pusat Penyelamatan Orangutan di Kalimantan dan hal ini masih terus berlangsung. Penyebab utamanya adalah nihilnya tindakan tegas terutama dalam hal penegakan hukum.” 

“Mata industri kelapa sawit internasional sedang menatap ke arah kasus ini. Golden Agri Resources (GAR) dan Wings Food dikonfirmasi telah memutuskan sementara kontrak dagang dengan PS Group, induk perusahaan PT. AE.
