Thanks to the report of one caring person, an online wildlife trafficker has been arrested in Langsa, East Aceh. 3 infant orangutans were saved along with several other rare species of wild animals. The owner of the online account ‘Habitat Aceh’ is now facing 5 years jail time based on Regulation 5, 1990. This is not the first time an online user has saved wild animals by reporting such crimes to COP. Thanks to their awareness, at least 12 individuals trading wildlife via social networks such as Facebook have been jailed and 167 rare species have been confiscated – including orangutans, bears and clouded leopards. Not bad, eh?
Reports that come in to COP will be quickly followed up with more detailed information, after an investigation to ascertain the truth of the situation. Once the facts have been confirmed, COP will communicate the report to the acting authorities – in these cases the police and the Office of Natural Resource Conservation (BKSDA)/Forestry Ministry. With this correspondence we are hoping for enforcement of the law. Until the suspects are caught and successfully brought to the interrogation room, the COP team will keep their mouths shut. Everything will be done swiftly and silently.
So, COP will not brag, make it into some kind of competition, ask for information from the public or pretend like we are chasing suspects. COP will not just turn your reports into a statistic like “online wildlife trafficking has risen 70%”, or “we receive as many as 1000 reports of cases per year”. For COP, the indicator of success in this war on crime will be the number of criminals thrown into jail, not the amount of comments, shares, or likes on Facebook.
That’s the way law enforcement should be done.
And so, COP urges you, the online community, not to rave on about these perpetrators, condemning them and spreading their faces far and wide. This only lets the suspect know that they have become a target, and allows them to quickly cover their tracks, making law enforcement a much more complicated task. Simply report them to us and let us deal with them alongside the authorities.
Once again, remember: Your reports are saving the animals!
LAPORANMU, MENYELAMATKAN SATWA
Sekali lagi, ingatlah: Laporanmu menyelamatkan satwa!
