This is Annie. The new orangutan male entered the COP Borneo orangutan rehabilitation center on March 11, 2018. He isn’t more than 4 years old. He lives with people in Merapun village. Inside the 3 × 3 m, this cage of wood became his home.

Three years of living with humans has changed his behavior and his present nature. Ever since childhood, Annie had to live without his mother’s affection. When viewed from outside physical conditions, Annie looks fine, in terms of not skinny.

First time entering the quarantine cage at COP Borneo, Annie looks confused. Annie often sounded loud like shouting during the daytime. During a month of watching Annie, Annie is a very spoiled orangutan. When any animal keeper comes along, he will be pretending to be shy to come. But when the animal keeper starts to move away from the cage, Annie begins to cry.

There was another month left for Annie in the quarantine cage. This benign behavior is going to be the toughest animal keeper homeworks. “But we are optimistic, every orangutan brought to COP Borneo will learn fast. The Borneo COP forest school is truly Borneo’s true rainforest. This forest will teach Annie.”, said Anen spirit. (SLX)

ANNIE SELAMA SEBULAN DI COP BORNEO
Inilah Annie. Orangutan jantan yang baru masuk pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo pada tanggal 11 Maret 2018. Usianya tak lebih dari 4 tahun. Dia hidup bersama warga di desa Merapun. Di dalam kandang berukuran 3 x 3m dari kayu ini menjadi rumahnya.

Tiga tahun hidup bersama manusia telah mengubah perilaku dan sifatnya yang sekarang. Sejak kecil, Annie harus hidup tanpa kasih sayang induknya. Jika dilihat dari kondisi fisik luar, Annie terlihat baik-baik saja, dalam artian tidak kurus.

Pertama kali masuk kandang karantina di COP Borneo, Annie terlihat bingung. Annie sering bersuara keras seperti berteriak ketika siang hari. Selama sebulan mengamati Annie, Annie merupakan orangutan yang sangat manja. Ketika ada animal keeper datang, dia akan malu-malu kucing mendekat. Namun ketika animal keeper mulai menjauh dari kandang, Annie pun mulai menangis.

Masih ada waktu satu bulan lagi yang harus dilalui Annie di kandang karantina. Perilaku jinak nya ini akan jadi PR terberat animal keeper. “Tapi kami optimis, setiap orangutan yang dibawa ke COP Borneo akan belajar cepat. Sekolah hutan COP Borneo benar-benar hutan hujan Kalimantan yang sesungguhnya. Hutan ini akan mengajarkan Annie.”, ujar Anen semangat. (EJA)

The day that COP stands to address the orangutans and habitat problems by documenting the conditions in the field where orangutans lose their habitat. In the year 2018 is also the history of zoo orangutans who have dozens and even tens of years will learn to live without the iron bars that restrict movement. The lucky orangutan is Ambon and Debbie.

Debbie, a 20-year-old female orangutan, after waiting in the quarantine cage for 2 years and 9 months at the orangutan rehabilitation center COP Borneo, Berau, East Kalimantan, finally enjoys his freedom. One … the first two weeks, Debbie still struggling downstairs. Make a nest / hideout from the leaves it finds underneath. Calling Debbie to the feeding platform while feeding also keeps track of her progress. Debbie climbed the first tree. He survives at a height of 15 meters. The next day, March 25, 2018, Debbie is still in the same tree, just above the feeding platform and dear, it was the last encounter with Debbie when the team finished feeding in the afternoon.

Debbie’s search was immediately made. When feeding morning at 09.00 WITA (26/3/2018) Debbie is not seen. The team toured the island until it got darker. The next day the team searched Debbie by sweeping the orangutan island, and checked out the usual place Debbie had visited. Unfortunately the search still has not produced results.

The addition of personnel to search Debbie was done, sweeping the island repeated, down river began to be done up to Nyapak village and Long Lanuk village. The village is about 4 hours down of the river with ketinting / boat from the orangutan island where Debbie lives. A whole week, Debbie is in searched and the team loses Debbie.

Not desperate, the team still continue to check the details on every corner of the island and the riverside. But there is no sign of its existence. Debbie is missing without a trace. (LSX)

DEBBIE HILANG DARI PULAU
1 Maret adalah hari yang sangat bersejarah untuk Centre for Orangutan Protection. Hari dimana COP berdiri untuk menjawab permasalahan orangutan dan habitatnya dengan mendokumentasi kondisi di lapangan dimana orangutan kehilangan habitatnya. Di tahun 2018 ini pula sejarah orangutan kebun binatang yang telah belasan bahkan puluhan tahun akan belajar hidup tanpa jeruji besi yang membatasi gerakannya. Orangutan yang beruntung itu adalah Ambon dan Debbie.

Debbie, orangutan betina yang berusia 20 tahun, setelah menanti di kandang karantina selama 2 tahun 9 bulan di pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo, Berau, Kalimantan Timur, akhirnya bisa menikmati kebebasannya. Satu… dua minggu pertama, Debbie masih berkutat di bawah. Membuat sarang/tempat persembunyian dari daun-daun yang ditemukannya di bawah. Memanggil Debbie ke feeding platform saat memberi makan juga untuk terus memantau perkembangannya. Debbie pun memanjat pohon pertamanya. Dia bertahan di ketinggian 15 meter. Keesokan harinya, 25 Maret 2018, Debbie masih berada di pohon yang sama, tepat di atas feeding platform dan sayang, itu adalah perjumpaan terakhir dengan Debbie saat tim selesai melakukan feeding di sore hari.

Pencarian Debbie pun langsung dilakukan. Saat feeding pagi pukul 09.00 WITA (26/3/2018) Debbie tidak terlihat. Tim berkeliling pulau hingga hari semakin gelap. Keesokan harinya tim mencari Debbie dengan menyisir pulau orangutan, dan mengecek tempat yang biasa Debbie kunjungi. Sayang pencarian masih belum membuahkan hasil.

Penambahan personil untuk pencarian Debbie pun dilakukan, penyisiran pulau diulang, penyusuran sungai mulai dilakukan hingga kampung Nyapak dan kampung Long Lanuk. Kampung tersebut sekitar 4 jam menyurusuri sungai dengan ketinting/perahu dari pulau orangutan tempat Debbie tinggal. Seminggu penuh, Debbie dalam pencarian dan tim kehilangan Debbie.

Tak kenal putus asa, tim pun masih terus melakukan pengecekkan detil di setiap sudut pulau dan pinggiran sungai. Namun tak ada tanda-tanda keberadaannya. Debbie hilang tanpa bekas.

Since 2014, Raju forced to lived in this cage. Like any other small orangutan stories who lived with humans, Raju was found in a palm plantation, East Kutai district, East Borneo. According to Mr. Ibrahim, Raju’s mother was being bitten by other orangutan and Raju was left behind in his palm plantation.

If Raju is currently 4 years old, that means Raju had just been born when he was separated from his mother. Orangutan babies are very dependent upon their mother. They will live with their mother until the age of 6 to 8 years. With their mom, they will learn how to live in nature. How to recognize the food, build a nest, and survive from the predators. And now? His long road back home has just begun.

Raju, the young orangutan will start living his life in COP Borneo rehabilitation center. On April 4, 2018, COP’s rapid response team called APE Crusader, saved him as they passed by a suspected palm plantation related to the case of a man get attacked and bitten by orangutan. Not only Raju, APE Crusader found out that there’s another 2 orangutans more who was kept by East Kutai resident. “I don’t know what happened here in 2014. So that Raju and friends are being kept by human.” said Paulinus Kristianto.

Large-scale land clearing for palm oil plantation in the last two decades have made the orangutans lose their home. COP prediction in 2008 that orangutans outside conservation areas will be extinct is in sight. Saving orangutans and forest has been done by COP since 2007. Sustainable palm oil certification do not save the orangutan either. The certificate only makes a ‘good image’ of palm oil industry. While in the field, orangutans are become homeless in their home.

RAJU, ORANGUTAN YANG DISELAMATKAN DARI KUTAI TIMUR
Sejak tahun 2014, Raju terpaksa hidup di kandang ini. Seperti cerita orangutan kecil lainnya yang hidup dengan manusia, Raju ditemukan di kebun sawit, kecamatan Kutai Timur, Kalimantan Timur. Menurut pak Ibrahim, induk Raju digigit orangutan lainnya dan Raju tertinggal di kebun sawit miliknya.

Jika saat ini Raju berusia 4 tahun, itu berarti Raju baru saja lahir saat terpisah dengan induknya. Bayi orangutan adalah bayi yang sangat tergantung dengan induknya. Anak orangutan akan hidup bersama induknya hingga usianya 6-8 tahun. Bersama induknya, dia akan belajar hidup di alam. Mengenali makanannya, membuat sarang dan bertahan hidup dari para predator. Dan sekarang? jalan panjang Raju untuk kembali akan dimulai.

Raju, anak orangutan ini akan memulai hidupnya di pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo. 4 April 2018 yang lalu, tim gerak cepat COP yang bernama APE Crusader menyelamatkannya saat menelusuri perkebunan kelapa sawit yang diduga terkait dengan kasus orangutan menyerang manusia hingga menyebabkan korban tergigit. Tak hanya Raju, ternyata APE Crusader pun menemukan 2 orangutan lainnya yang dipelihara warga Kutai Timur. “Entah apa yang terjadi di tahun 2014 di daerah sini. Raju dan lainnya harus hidup dalam peliharaan manusia.”, ujar Paulinus Kristanto.

Pembukaan perkebunan kelapa sawit secara besar-besaran dalam 2 dekade telah membuat orangutan kehilangan habitatnya. Prediksi COP di tahun 2008 bahwa orangutan yang berada di luar kawasan konservasi akan punah sudah di depan mata. Menyelamatkan orangutan dan hutan sudah sejak tahun 2007 COP lakukan. Sertifikat minyak kelapa sawit yang berkesinambungan tak juga menyelamatkan orangutan. Sertifikat hanya membuat ‘citra baik’ industri kelapa sawit. Sementara di lapangan, orangutan menjadi gelandangan di rumahnya.
