EARLY YEAR SCHOOL VISIT AT CIKAL AMRI SETU SCHOOL

An invitation to request a speaker for the Environment and Development class at Cikal school – AMRI Setu, East Jakarta started COP’s school visit in 2019. Tuesday, January 8, 2019, Amadhea W. Kaslan along with one of Orangufriend Jakarta members who is also an alumni of COP Batch 8, Zara Zein, began sharing how to protect orangutans by the Center for Orangutan Protection, the only orangutan organization established by Indonesian youths.

Twelve students from grades 6,7,8 and 9 took part in the program with the topic of Wildlife and Its Contribution to Sustainable Environment. The school visit this time became very much alive because the student were active. Quizzes about orangutans and other wildlife also colored the class for almost two hours.

COP, with the assistance of Orangufriends (an orangutan support group), sees education as having an important role in the protection of orangutans. “Later, those students will replace us, continue to protect orangutans,” Amadhea said excitedly. SCHOOL VISIT AWAL TAHUN DI SEKOLAH CIKAL-AMRI SETU
Undangan permohonan menjadi pembicara untuk kelas Environment and Development di sekolah Cikal – AMRI Setu, Jakarta Timur mengawali kunjungan ke sekolah COP tahun 2019. Selasa, 8 Januari 2019, Amadhea W. Kaslan bersama satu orangufriends Jakarta yang juga merupakan alumni COP School Batch 8 yaitu Zara Zein mulai berbagi bagaimana perlindungan orangutan yang dilakukan Centre for Orangutan Protection, satu-satunya organisasi orangutan yang didirikan oleh putra-putri Indonesia.

Dua belas siswa dari kelas 6,7,8 dan 9 yang mengikuti program mendapatkan topik Wildlife and Its Contribution to Sustainable Environment. Kunjungan ke sekolah kali ini menjadi berbeda dengan begitu aktifnya para siswa. Kuis-kuis tentang orangutan dan satwa liar lainnya mewarnai kelas selama hampir dua jam.

COP dengan bantuan Orangufriends (kelompok pendukung orangutan) memandang edukasi memiliki peran penting dalam perlindungan orangutan. “Kelak, mereka yang akan menggantikan kita, melanjutkan perlindungan orangutan.”, ujar Amadhea dengan bersemangat. BERANI’S FIRST DAY AT FOREST SCHOOL

One more hope in early 2019. An orangutan was rescued from a wooden box in the village of Meratak, East Kutai, East Kalimantan on 23 October 2018. After going through a quarantine period and extended with a comprehensive medical examination, Berani, the orangutan, started his forest school class. He did not scream. He did not move much either. The first day Berani just spent his time staying on the ground, under the hammock of the animal keeper.

The second week is of course different from the first week. Berani started to climb trees. Went up and down from the same tree. He has not touched hanging roots and branches yet. Berani is still trying to adjust.

The look in his eyes slowly began to change. From fear to calm with hope. Berani will keep trying, it all depends on the skills of the animal keepers who take him to forest school. Let’s send your enthusiasm to the animal keepers. (Lina_CB)

HARI PERTAMA BERANI DI SEKOLAH HUTAN
Satu lagi harapan di awal tahun 2019. Ini adalah orangutan yang diselamatkan dari kotak kayu di desa Meratak, Kutai Timur, Kalimantan Timur pada 23 Oktober 2018 yang lalu. Setelah melalui masa karantina dan diperpanjang dengan pemeriksaan medis secara menyeluruh, orangutan Berani pun memulai kelas sekolah hutannya. Tak ada teriakan darinya. Tak ada pergerakan juga dari Berani. Hari pertama Berani hanya dihabiskan dengan berdiam di tanah, di bawah hammock animal keeper.

Minggu pertama tentu saja berbeda dengan minggu kedua. Berani mulai memanjat pohon. Naik dan kemudian turun dari pohon yang sama. Tali akar yang menggantung bahkan ranting-ranting yang bercabang belum juga dijamahnya. Berani terus berusaha menyesuaikan diri.

Tatapan matanya perlahan mulai berubah. Dari takut jadi teduh dengan harapan. Berani akan terus mencoba, semua tergantung kecakapan para animal keeper yang membawanya ke sekolah hutan. Yuk kirim semangat mu untuk para animal keeper. (Lina_CB)

WELCOME TO COP SCHOOL BATCH 9

Since Tuesday afternoon, one by one the Batch 9 COP School participants arrived. New faces, looked hesitant at first, reached out to get acquainted. They are agents of change for the next conservation world.

Of course their presence in the APE Warrior camp went through some struggle. They ventured to register, reached into their pockets to pay the registration fee, took the time to work on assignments at the selection stage and the costs to arrive in Yogyakarta was not small . Of the nearly 170 who were interested, it shrank to 49 people and ended up with 29 people who had the opportunity to take part in the COP School on 9-14 January 2019. “Actually there were 31 who passed the selection stage, but three of them had to resign due to urgent needs. If you want to join next year, you have to register and went through the selection process again”, Said Ramadhani, head of the COP School.

“This is not over, if you have participated in the Batch 9 COP School then what next? Please apply what you have learned in the next five days. At the end of 2019, at the Jambore Orangufriends, it’s graduation time with what you have applied after finishing Yogya sessions,” added Ramadhani again. SELAMAT DATANG DI COP SCHOOL BATCH 9
Sejak Selasa sore, satu persatu peserta COP School Batch 9 berdatangan. Wajah-wajah baru dengan tingkah yang ragu-ragu mengulurkan tangan untuk berkenalan. Mereka adalah agen perubahan untuk dunia konservasi selanjutnya.

Tentu saja kehadiran mereka di camp APE Warrior penuh perjuangan. Mereka memberanikan diri mendaftar, merogoh kantungnya untuk membayar biaya pendaftaran, meluangkan waktu mengerjakan tugas di tahap seleksi dan biaya yang tidak sedikit untuk sampai di Yogyakarta. Dari hampir 170 yang tertarik, menyusut menjadi 49 orang dan berakhir dengan 29 orang yang berkesempatan mengikuti COP School pada 9-14 Januari 2019. “Sebenernya ada 31 yang lulus seleksi, namun terpaksa mengundurkan diri karena ada keperluan mendesak. Jika mau ikut tahun depan, ya harus daftar dan seleksi lagi.”, ujar Ramadhani, kepala sekolah COP School tiga tahun terakhir ini.

“Ini belum berakhir, jika kamu sudah ikut COP School Batch 9 lalu bagaimana? Silahkan terapkan apa yang kamu peroleh selama lima hari kedepan. Akhir tahun 2019, di Jambore Orangufriends saatnya wisuda dengan apa yang telah kamu lakukan usai dari Yogya.”, tambah Ramadhani lagi. Kemudian… yuk jadi pendamping untuk peserta COP School Batch 10.
