What is the condition of the field at COP Borneo orangutan rehabilitation center?

The Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is located in East Borneo is in a tropical rain forest with a very tight and thick trees canopy. Even the sun is very difficult to penetrate the forest floor. This location makes the plants always wet and moist. This condition will get worse when the rain comes. Red soil conditions will be more slippery when it rains.

When the forest school program, the journey to the location will become it’s own art. “The challenge of carrying orangutan became bigger because the roads are slippery and at some point, our feet will be in a puddle of mud that makes our way even harder,”said Wety, the orangutan baby sitter.

They are like a family members which you don’t have choices to be familiar with.”, said Amir the animal keeper with a big smile.

Yes, that afternoon, Amir got a leech bite at his feet while carrying Owi, Bonti and Happy to the forest school. The leech that initially as big as a toothpick turn into as fat as an adult’s thumbs, “If we satiate our blood, this leech may be drowsy,” said Amir.

However, the leeches were never killed, otherwise it set to be released. “These leeches is the landlord, We come and borrow it for the jungle school. Naturally they such the blood that is their food.”, thought Amir.

Legs with protector and high shoes will not escape from the leeches. But do not be afraid of leeches and mud in here, ok, because this rehabilitation center is a miniature tropical rain forest of Borneo that is still very natural. LINTAH DAN LUMPUR
Bagaimanakah kondisi lapangan di pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo? Pusat rehabilitasi orangutan yang berada di Kalimantan Timur ini berada di hutan hujan tropis dengan kanopi pohon yang sangat rapat. Bahkan matahari sangat sulit menembus lantai hutan karena terhalang kanopi yang luar biasa tebalnya. Lokasi ini membuat tanang selalu basah dan lembab. Kondisi ini akan semakin parah manakala hujan datang. Kondisi tanah merah akan semakin licin saat hujan turun.

Saat program sekolah hutan, perjalanan menuju lokasi akan menjadi seni tersendiri. “Tantangan mengendong orangutan menjadi lebih besar karena jalanan menjadi licin dan di beberapa titik, kaki kita akan terjeblos genangan lumpur yang membuat jalan kita semakin berat.”, ujar Wety, si baby sitter orangutan.

Dimana kita sibuk menyeimbangkan langkah kaki di tengah lumpur yang licin, kita pun harus berhadapan dengan si lintah, penyedot darah. “Kalau ke sini, kudu kenalan sama yang namanya lintah dan lumpur. Mereka itu seperti anggota keluarga yang mau ngak mau, harus akrab dengan kita.”, ungkap Amir, animal keeper dengan senyum lebar.

Ya, siang itu, Amir kena satu gigitan lintah di kakinya saat membawa orangutan Owi, Bonti dan Happi menuju sekolah hutan. Lintah yang awalnya sebatang liding akan berubah menjadi gendut seperti jempol, jari orang dewasa. “Kalau kenyang menghisap darah kita, lintah ini mungkin akan mengantuk kekenyangan ya.”, kata Amir.

Namun, lintah-lintah itu tidak pernah dibunuh, sebaliknya dilepas. “Lintah-lintah ini yang punya tanah. Kita yang datang dan pinjam untuk sekolah hutan. Wajarlah kalau mereka menghisap darah yang merupakan makanan mereka.”, pikir Amir lagi.

Kaki dengan pelindung kaki dan sepatu tinggi tak kan luput dari hisapan lintah. Tapi jangan takut dengan lintah dan lumpur di sini ya, karena pusat rehabilitasi ini adalah miniatur hutan hujan tropis Kalimantan yang masih sangat alami. Di sinilah proses panjang rehabilitasi orangutan dimulai. (NIK)
