COP REPORTED THE CRIME TO LAW ENFORCER

One day later, the APE Crusader team who had just arrived from the field were already in the office of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) in Jakarta. On September 6, the team came to the MoEF with a complete report presenting the findings in the field. Unfortunately, the director of the Directorate General of Law Enforcer who should be on the 4th floor was not in place.

The death of an adult male orangutan on the canal of palm oil plantation with a body caught in a timber log is unusual. From the autopsy, there were 7 air rifle bullets and the orangutan’s right-hand thumb was missing. When the body was found, the team also saw two excavators that were land clearing the area. Around the location were also found several orangutan nests. “Come on, Law Enforcer, we are ready to support.” (IND)

COP MELAPOR ADA KEJAHATAN PADA GAKKUM
Berselang satu hari, tim APE Crusader yang baru saja tiba dari lapangan sudah berada di kantor Kementian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan di Jakarta. Siang, 6 September, lengkap dengan laporan tertulisnya menyampaikan hasil temuan di lapangan. Sayang direktur Direktorat Jenderal Gakkum yang berada di lantai 4 tidak ada di tempat.

“Kami pun pindah ke kantor Badan Restorasi Gambut. Gambut Indonesia sedang terancam.”, ujar Paulinus Kristianto dengan kecewa, karena tidak dapat bertemu dengan orang yang bertanggung jawab. “Kami berharap laporan dugaan telah terjadi kejahatan pembukaan lahan di habitat orangutan yang juga berada di lahan gambut dapat segera ditanggapi. Ini seperti menghitung mundur waktu. Semakin cepat akan semakin banyak yang bisa diselamatkan. Centre for Orangutan Protection mendukung penuh Gakkum KLHK untuk melakukan kajian dan pemeriksaan di Seruyan, Kalimantan Tengah.”, tegas Ramadhani, manajer perlindungan Orangutan dan Habitatnya.

Kematian satu orangutan jantan dewasa di kanal konsesi perkebunan sawit dengan tubuh tersangkut pada batang kayu bukanlah hal yang biasa. Dari otopsi diketahui ada 7 peluru senapan angin dan jempol tangan kanan orangutan tersebut hilang. Pada saat ditemukan ada dua ekskavator yang sedang landclearing. Di sekitar lokasi juga ditemukan beberapa sarang orangutan. “Ayo Gakkum, kami siap membantu.”.

SCHOOL VISIT TO SMK NEGERI 2 BERAU

All of a sudden, the electricity went out when APE Guardian team (Centre for Orangutan Protection team who work on orangutan release) conducted a school visit activity. There was shouts of disappointment heard at this vocational school at the time. The team immediately modificated the school visit process. Story telling and question and answer session became a more interesting discussion session.

September 6, 2016, All of 10th grade and 11th grade students of SMKN 2 Berau, Easti Kalimantan were gathered in the school hall. At 09.00 WITA sharp, Ipeh, a volunteer who came from Jogja, started introducing the team. This was the second volunteering activity of Ipeh after helping the APE Guardian team in the orangutan release forest last year. ” Being a volunteer of COP is different and addictive. Just like today, facilities limitation such as black out will not stop us. When will we practice modifying the limitation if we don’t jump into action?.” that was what Ipeh said.

East Kalimantan province is a home to the Pongo pygmaeus morio, a sub-species of orangutan. The sub-species is the smallest sub-species in Kalimantan. Educating from school to school became an important activity to directly provide information about the increasingly threat of morio orangutan presence. ” We believe that the conservation of Borneo lies on their hands.” added Ipeh optimistically. SCHOOL VISIT DI SMK NEGERI 2 BERAU
Tiba-tiba saja listrik padam saat tim APE Guardian (tim Centre for Orangutan Protection yang bekerja untuk pelepasliaran orangutan) melakukan kegiatan kunjungan ke sekolah. Terdengar teriakkan kecewa para siswa Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan ini. Tentu saja tim langsung memodifikasi proses ’school visit’ kali ini. Cerita dan tanya jawab menjadi sebuah diskusi yang lebih menarik.

6 September 2018, seluruh kelas X dan XI SMKN 2 Berau, Kalimantan Timur sudah berkumpul di aula sekolah. Tepat pukul 09.00 WITA, relawan Ipeh yang baru saja datang dari Yogyakarta memulai perkenalan tim. Ini adalah kegiatan relawan Ipeh yang kedua kalinya setelah tahun lalu ikut membantu tim APE Guardian di hutan pelepasliaran orangutan. “Jadi relawan di COP itu unik dan bikin ketagihan. Seperti hari ini, keterbatasan fasilitas seperti matinya listrik tidak akan membuat kita berhenti. Kapan lagi kita bisa berlatih memodifikasi keterbatasan kalau tidak langsung terjun ke lapangan.”, begitu ujar Ipeh.

Kalimantan Timur adalah provinsi dengan keberadaan sub-spesis orangutan Pongo pygmaeus morio. Sub spesies ini merupakan sub spesies terkecil di Kalimantan. Edukasi dari sekolah ke sekolah menjadi begitu penting untuk secara langsung memberikan informasi tentang semakin terancamnya keberadaan orangutan morio. “Kami yakin, di tangan merekalah nantinya dunia konservasi Kalimantan.”, tambah Ipeh optimis. LET’S SUPPORT THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY REGULATION NO 20 OF 2018

The government has just made a big leap by issuing the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 20 of 2018 concerning Types of Protected Plants and Wildlife.

Centre of Orangutan Protection welcomes the regulation and ready to support the government to enforce the law. “Furthermore, COP consider the regulation as important point for culture change, from the culture of confining animals to the culture of nurturing them in nature.”, said Hardi Baktiantoro, founder of Centre for Orangutan Protection.

Wildlife trading either online or offline at bird markets could not just happen. It has been studied. The dilemma that has been occurred so far is those wildlife are threatened to extinction in their habitat, while there are many illegal traders and even people make an open bird singing contest. Let say Murai batu bird/ kick forest (kittacincla malbarica), cucak raw (Pycnonotus zeylanicus) dan Jalak sure (Gracupica calla).

The existence of Ministry Regulation No 20/2018 makes tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) are legally protected animals. This is a prompt government effort to protect the newly discovered orangutan species in the past year.

COP is calling all orangufriends to fully support the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to not back down enforcing this Regulation. (SAR)

AYO DUKUNG PERMEN LHK 20 TAHUN 2018
Lompatan besar baru saja dilakukan Pemerintah pada bulan Juni 2018 dengan mengeluarkan Peraturan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan Republik Indonesia (Permen LHK RI) Nomor 20 Tahun 2018 tentang Jenis Tumbuhan dan Satwa Liar yang Dilindungi.

Centre for Orangutan Protection menyambut baik Permen No. 20 ini dan siap mendukung pemerintah untuk menegakkan hukum. “Lebih jauh lagi COP memandang bahwa Permen ini merupakan titik penting untuk perubahan budaya yaitu dari budaya mengurung satwa menjadi memelihara di alam bebas.”, ujar Hardi Baktiantoro, pendiri Centre for Orangutan Protection.

“Masuknya satwa liar yang sering diperdagangkan baik itu secara online maupun di pasar burung ini tentu saja bukan asal jadi. Ini sudah menjadi kajian. Dilema yang terjadi selama ini, kondisi satwa liar tersebut di habitatnya sudah terancam punah namun banyak terdapat di pedagang bahkan menjadi lomba burung berkicau secara terbuka. Sebut saja burung Murai batu/ Kucica hutan (Kittacincla malbarica), Cucak rawa (Pycnonotus zeylanicus) dan Jalak suren (Gracupica jalla).

Dengan adanya Permen No. 20/2018 orangutan tapanuli (Pongo tapanuliensis) telah ditetapkan menjadi satwa yang dilindungi Undang-Undang. Ini adalah usaha cepat pemerintah untuk melindungi spesies orangutan yang baru ditemukan di tahun 2017 yang lalu.

COP memanggil seluruh orangufriends untuk memberikan dukungan penuh kepada KLHK untuk tidak mundur menegakkan Permen ini.
