WHEN BABY BITES LANDED SMOOTHLY (1)

Bitten by an orangutan baby? How does it feel? Babies are cute, cute and adorable. Are you sure???

There are currently 9 orangutan babies at the Borneo COP Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, Berau, East Kalimantan. Orangutan babies have physical and behavioral characteristics similar to human babies. The difference is that orangutan babies have 10 teeth when they are one year old, including canines. You can imagine when they want to play or feel disturbed and do biting actions, right?

Baby orangutan bites landed smoothly on your skin, this commonly experienced by baby sitters and medical team. Usually, new baby orangutans enter the quarantine cage for the first time. This is an orangutan baby self-defence mechanism.

Orangutan babies experienced past trauma before arriving at the rehabilitation center, when they were forced to escape from their mothers. It could be that the mother was brutally murdered before their eyes. In fact, the orangutan mothers will not part with their children before their children are ready to live their own lives in the forest. The child is separated from the mother when she or he is 6-8 years old. (EBO)

SAAT GIGITAN BAYI MENDARAT DENGAN MULUS (1)

Tergigit bayi orangutan? Bukan tergigit tapi digigit bayi orangutan. Gimana rasanya? Bayi kan lucu, imut dan menggemaskan. Yakin???

Saat ini ada 9 bayi orangutan di pusat Rehabilitasi Orangutan COP Borneo, Berau, Kalimantan Timur. Bayi orangutan memiliki karakter fisik dan perilaku yang mirip dengen bayi manusia. Bedanya, bayi orangutan sudah mempunyai 10 gigi saat berumur satu tahun termasuk gigi taring. Bisa dibayangkan saat mereka ingin bermain atau merasa terganggu dan melakukan tindakan gigit-menggigit, bukan?

Kejadian gigitan bayi mendarat dengan mulus sudah biasa dirasakan baby sitter maupun medis. Biasanya, bayi orangutan yang baru masuk ke kandang karantina untuk pertama kalinya. Ini merupakan usaha bayi orangutan mempertahankan diri.

Trauma masa lalu sebelum bayi orangutan sampai di pusat rehabilitasi, dimana dia secara terpaksa lepas dari induknya. Bisa jadi, induknya dibunuh secara kejam di depan matanya. Faktanya, induk orangutan tidak akan berpisah dengan anaknya sebelum anaknya siap menjalani kehidupan sendiri di hutan. Anak baru terpisah dengan induknya saat berumur 6-8 tahun. (FLO)

ROOM MAKE UP FOR ORANGUTAN

Since the block enclosure was established in 2015 and inhabited by Ambon and Memo, it has never been repainted. Small repairs such as for broken bars or cage floor damage have been carried out periodically. Now, the room make up team will work to improve any defects for the orangutan’s cage.

Limited number of enclosures require continuous planning. When the medical team is ready for their job to check orangutan’s health in this block, the animal keepers prepare for painting, hammock repairs and inspection of the cage. Orangutans prepare to move rooms.

The room make up team who are none other than tireless workers at COP Borneo are ready to sand, paint and make sure the rooms are ready to be occupied. Giving disinfectants is a signal, Ambon the orangutan is welcome to occupy his new room.

“Amazing room make up team!” Hopefully team will always be in good health to able to give new colors to other orangutan rooms. (EBO)

BEDAH KAMAR UNTUK ORANGUTAN

Sejak kandang blok yang dihuni orangutan Ambon dan Memo berdiri di tahun 2015, kadang belum pernah dicat ulang. Perbaikan-perbaikan kecil seperti besi yang putus atau semen lantai kandang yang bolong secara berkala sudah dilakukan. Kini, kehadiran tim bedah kamar orangutan akan bekerja memperbaiki kekurangan yang ada.

Keterbatasan kandang membutuhkan perencanaan yang berkesinambungan. Bagian medis tentu saja siap dengan pekerjaan pemeriksaan kesehatan orangutan di blok ini. Sementara animal keeper bersiap untuk pengecatan, perbaikan hammock dan pemeriksaan kelayakkan kandang. Orangutan bersiap untuk berpindah kamar.

Tim bedah kamar yang tak lain adalah pekerja-pekerja tak kenal lelah di COP Borneo telah siap mengamplas, mengecat dan memastikan kamar siap dihuni. Pemberian disinfektan menjadi isyarat, orangutan Ambon dipersilahkan menempati kamar barunya.

“Tim bedah kamar yang luar biasa!”. Semoga tim sehat terus agar selalu bisa memberi warna baru di kamar-kamar orangutan lainnya. (FLO)

VISIT TO SCHOOL OF MENTARI CENGKARENG

COP school visits are usually held in the morning. But this time the schedule is 2 pm at Mentari school Cengkareng. Responding the invitation from the school, the COP team attended a sharing session on orangutan on Monday, April 29 2019.

Around 180 7-11 grade students gathered in the mini hall and all participants sat on the floor. They were very enthusiastic about the event. They were amazed by the facts presented, especially the threats faced by orangutans and other wildlife. The role of orangutans as a key species in maintaining the health and sustainability of forests also makes them believe that orangutans should be in their natural habitat. As a gardener of the forest, they keep the ecosystem balanced. This session lasted 1 hour and a half which was filled with presentations and questions and answers.

After the event, Mr. Haris as the coordinator of the activities from the Mentari School spoke with the COP team that they wanted to hold a performance with an environmental theme, more specifically orangutan. “We now have a picture of where we want to donate,” said Pak Haris. KUNJUNGAN KE SEKOLAH MENTARI CENGKARENG

School visit COP biasanya dilangsungkan di pagi hari. Namun kali ini jadwalnya jam 2 sore dengan tujuan sekolah Mentari Cengkareng. Menjawab undangan dari pihak sekolah, tim dari COP hadir mengisi sesi sharing tentang orangutan pada hari Senin, 29 April 2019.

Sekitar 180 siswa kelas 7-11 memenuhi ruangan dan semua peserta duduk di lantai. Mereka sangat antusias mengikuti acara. Mereka tampak tercengang dengan fakta-fakta yang disajikan, terutama ancaman yang dihadapi orangutan serta satwa liar lainnya. Peran orangutan sebagai species kunci dan menjaga kesehatan dan keberlangsungan hutan juga membuat mereka yakin bahwa orangutan memang seharusnya tetap ada di alamnya. Sebagai gardener of the forest, mereka menjaga ecosystem tetap seimbang. Sesi ini berlangsung 1 jam setengah yang diisi dengan presentasi dan tanya jawab.

Setelah acara berlangsung, Pak Haris sebagai coordinator kegiatan dari Sekolah Mentari berbicara dengan tim COP bahwa mereka ingin mengadakan pertunjukan yang bertemakan lingkungan, lebih spesifik lagi orangutan. “Kami sekarang sudah punya gambaran ke mana kalau mau donasi,” Kata Pak Haris.
