TERMITES FOR ORANGUTAN AT COP BORNEO

Termites are one of the most popular foods for orangutans. Fortunately, termite nests are easy to find around the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center of COP Borneo. Not far from orangutan cage, rotten trees and fallen tree trunks become special treasures for orangutan.

When the forest is not in fruit season, termite eggs, ant eggs or cambium are usually used by orangutans as a booster for their stomach. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, when the orangutans were in forest school, they immediately knew and stopped around those rotten trees. But for now, animal keepers are the one who helped orangutan to looking for them.

Annie looks really enjoying the termite eggs which hiding in the nest. He sniffing then prying the hole with his finger that unfortunately too big and finally shaking the nest with his mouth open, hoping the eggs will fall into his mouth. If nothing left anymore, Annie started chopping the nest and kept looking with his forefinger.

No different with Nigel. This year’s release orangutan candidate that has been on the pre-release island for four months was forced return to the quarantine to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Nigel looks happy with his termite nests. He must be missed the pre-release island.

(WID)
