COP CONDEMNS THE VIOLENCE AGAINST ORANGUTANS AT THE SURABAYA ZOO (KBS)
Jakarta – The spread of a video of alleged orangutan abuse at the Surabaya Zoo (KBS) has raised concerns. In the video it appears that orangutans have experienced acts of violence allegedly by animal keepers.
“We deeply regret the occurrence of alleged orangutan violence inside the enclosure. Orangutans should get good care, protection and treatment, this in fact at the Surabaya Zoo they get acts of violence.”, Hery Susanto, manager of Anti Wildlife Crime of the Center for Orangutan Protection.
Zoos should play a role as the last sanctuary against animals outside their habitat through the role of conservation, education, research and recreation. But with this incident you have to think again when visiting the zoo. The role that this zoo should have played has been questioned when this violence took place at the Surabaya Zoo.
“Allegations of violence against these orangutans must be a serious concern for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) to carry out detailed investigations regarding this case of violence.”, Hery Susanto, Manager of the Anti Wildlife Crime of COP.
In several media publications, the management confirmed that the orangutans were beaten with hoses due to fighting between orangutans when they were about to enter the cage. The parties concerned can also investigate the cage management pattern and the safety standard for these animals and animal keepers, and why this violence occurred.
“We will wait for the steps from KLHK regarding this case, hopefully there will be decisive action regarding cases of violence that occur in orangutans on KBS. COP MENGUTUK DUGAAN KEKERASAN ORANGUTAN DI KEBUN BINATANG SURABAYA (KBS)Jakarta – Tersebarnya video dugaan penganiayaan orangutan di Kebun Binatang Surabaya (KBS) menimbulkan keprihatinan tersendiri. Dalam video nampak orangutan mengalami tindak kekerasan oleh yang diduga oknum perawat satwa.
“Kami sangat menyesalkan kejadian dugaan kekerasan orangutan yang ada di dalam kandang tersebut. Seharusnya orangutan mendapatkan perawatan, perlindungan dan perlakuan yang baik, ini malah di Kebun Binatang Surabaya mendapat tindakan kekerasan.”, Hery Susanto, manajer Anti Kejahatan Satwa Centre for Orangutan Protection.
Kebun Binatang seharusnya menjalankan peran sebagai benteng pertahanan terakhir terhadap satwa di luar habitatnya melalui peran konservasi, pendidikan, riset dan penelitian serta rekreasi. Namun dengan adanya kejadian ini harus berpikir ulang ketika mengunjungi kebun binatang. Peran yang seharusnya dilakukan kebun binatang ini menjadi dipertanyakan kembali ketika kekerasan ini terjadi di Kebun Binatang Surabaya.
“Dugaan kekerasan pada orangutan ini wajib menjadi perhatian serius bagi Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK) untuk melakukan penelusuran yang mendetil terkait kasus kekerasan ini.”, Hery Susanto, Manajer Anti Kejahatan Satwa COP.
Dalam beberapa publikasi media, pihak manajemen membenarkan jika orangutan dipukuli dengan selang akibat perkelahian sesama orangutan ketika akan masuk kandang tidur. Hal ini juga bisa menjadi penelusuran pihak terkait terhadap pola manajemen kandang dan pola standar keamanan bagi perawat satwa dan satwa tersebut, kenapa kekerasan orangutan ini terjadi.
“Kita akan menunggu langkah dari KLHK terkait kasus ini, semoga ada tindakan tegas terkait kasus kekerasan yang terjadi pada orangutan di KBS. KLHK selaku pemilik otoritas penuh terhadap lembaga konservasi satwa di Indonesia bisa melakukan audit manajemen kandang dan perawatan guna memastikan kekerasan terhadap orangutan mendapat tindakan tegas bukan sekedar berita lalu saja.”, Hery Susanto, Manajer Kejahatan Satwa COP.
