JHONY MARCUS, RELIABLE COP KETITITING [BOAT] MOTORIST
Born 20 years ago in Kluber, North Borneo with the blood of Dayak from mother side and Bugis tribe in the father side. Jhony joins the COP Borneo orangutan rehabilitation center since November 2015 with the position of post coordinator of orangutan island. Under Jhony’s cooridination, 7 orangutans in orangutan islands should always be monitored, island patrols and feeding.
“We patrolled by boat 5 times a day and 2 times at monitoring post with binoculars,” said Jhony. When it rains for days, working at orangutan monitoring post is quite a high risk.Kelay River that surrounds the orangutan island will rise and floods will come. The main route to monitor the island becomes swift. The island will be submerged and leaving 50% of its land. Floods usually drag timber from up stream of Kelay river in the form of the size of an adult’s hand to the extend of the utility pole. The current reading skill and the obstacle ate absolutely necessary. Don’t let the boat hit the timber, it will cause the boat propeller destroyed or even carried away by the current, capsized and sink.
Since the age of 12, Jhony has understood the river and the flow of light and large floods. “Under the condition of massive flooding with lots of timber and debris, we have to move lane, dodge and spin or we will be hit by the debris that are carried by the water, crushed, capsized and drowned”, explains Jhony. “We have to keep patroling wirt the flood to make sure the orangutans are in a safe place, not to let them to be dragged, drifting and lost,” he added.
Jhony also tell us one of his annoyance when there are people who interfere with orangutans on the island. Usually Jhony will reprimand and explain that at any time orangutans can strike if we are too close.
Then who is his favorite orangutan? Yes… Nigel the smartestof all , not nosy with other orangutans and pretty wild. When Jhony hear about Nigel is selected as one of the candidates who will be released in the near future, he said,” Hearing him as a candidate, Makes me very happy. Jhony bergabung di pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo sejak November 2015 dengan jabatan sebagai kordinator pos pantau pulau orangutan. Di bawah kordinasi Jhony, 7 orangutan yang berada di pulau orangutan harus terus dipantau/ monitoring, patroli pulau dan feeding orangutan.
“Kami melakukan patroli dengan menggunakan perahu sehari 5 kali dan 2 kali monitoring di pos pantau dengan teropong.”, ujar Jhony. Bekerja di pos pantau orangutan cukup beresiko tinggi, manakala hujan turun selama berhari-hari. Sungai Kelay yang mengelilingi pulau orangutan akan naik dan banjir besar pun datang. Jalur utama untuk memantau pulau pun menjadi berarus deras. Pulau akan terendam dan menyisakan 50% daratannya. Banjir biasanya menyeret kayu-kayu dari hulu sungai Kelay dari ukuran tangan orang dewasa hingga sepanjang tiang listrik. Kemahiran membaca arus dan halangannya mutlak dilakukan. Jangan sampai menghantam kayu yang bisa menyebabkan perahu pecah bahkan baling-baling mesin hancur atau malah terbawa arus, perahu terbalik dan tenggelam.
Jhony sejak usia 12 tahun sudah paham medan sungai dan aliran yang ringan dan banjir besar. “Dalam kondisi banjir besar dengan banyak kayu, kita harus pindah jalur, menghindar dan berputar atau kita akan tertabrak kayu yang terbawa banjir, hancur, terbalik dan tenggelam.”, jelas Jhony. “Kami harus tetap patroli dengan kondisi banjir untuk memastikan orangutan berada di tempat yang aman, tak sampai terseret arus, hanyut dan hilang.”, tambahnya.
Jhony pun menceritakan kejengkelannya saat ada orang yang mengganggu orangutan di pulau. Biasanya Jhony akan menegur dan menjelaskan bahwa sewaktu-waktu orangutan bisa menyerang jika terlalu dekat.
Lalu siapakah orangutan favoritnya? Ya… Nigel yang paling pintar, tidak usil dengan orangutan lainnya dan cukup liar. Saat Jhony mendengar, Nigel adalah salah satu kandidat yang akan dilepasliarkan dalam waktu dekat ini, “Mendengarnya sebagai kandidat saja, saya sudah senang sekali. Saya tidak sabar menunggu Nigel dilepasliarkan dan jika berhasil… usaha saya dan teman-teman tidak sia-sia.”. (NIK)
