It’s been 13 years that this veterinarian has been taking on wild animals. She began her career handling issues of threatened wildlife species in Indonesia, from confiscations and illegal trafficking to the rescue of victims of conflict in East Java and Bali.
As a consultant veterinarian in the Tiger Protection and Conservation Unit team in Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Dr. Yanti shared a canoe with a Sumatran tiger. This is the eleventh live tiger that has been rescued in the last 8 years.
Alongside the Tiger Rescue Unit of the Conservation of Natural Resources Agency, Bengkulu, Dr. Yanti relocated two Sumatran tigers on the 28th of October 2015. One of these tigers had been caught in a hunter’s snare in a palm oil plantation, while the other was a victim of human conflict. It is suspected this tiger was intended for consumption.
Both Sumatran tigers were moved to the North Bengkulu conservation forest. “Incidentally, there are no roads to the location, so we had to cross the Seblat river in a canoe, together with the Sumatran tiger. Yes, this would have to be the first time I’ve shared a canoe with a big cat” Dr. Erni Suyanti Musabine commented. Dr. Yanti’s happiness in being able to bring the tiger to a much more suitable location outweighed any fears she had about climbing into a canoe with the almost extinct Sumatran tiger.
Sudah tiga belas tahun seorang dokter hewan ini bergelut dengan satwa liar. Mengawali karirnya dengan menangani satwa liar yang terancam punah di Indonesia yang berasal dari penyitaan, perdagangan illegal bahkan dari penyelamatan korban konflik di Jawa Timur dan Bali.
Sebagai seorang konsultan dokter di Tim Tiger Protection and Conservation Unit, Kerinci Seblat, Sumatera membawa drh. Yanti seperahu dengan harimau Sumatera. Ini adalah harimau hidup ke-11 (kesebelas) yang berhasil diselamatkannya selama 8 (delapan) tahun terakhir.
Bersama tim Tiger Rescue Unit BKSDA Bengkulu, drh. Yanti merelokasi dua ekor harimau Sumatera pada 28 Oktober 2015 yang lalu. Satu harimau Sumatera merupakan korban jerat pemburu liar di perkebunan sawit. Sementara yang satunya lagi korban konflik manusia dengan dugaan untuk dikonsumsi.
Kedua harimau Sumatera itu dipindahkan ke hutan konservasi di Bengkulu Utara. “Kebetulan untuk mencapai lokasi tidak ada jalan darat, jadinya harus menyeberang sungai Seblat seperahu dengan harimau Sumatra ini. Ya, ini untuk pertama kalinya saya seperahu dengan kucing besar.”, tutur drh Erni Suyanti Musabine. Perasaan bahagia drh. Yanti membawa harimau ke lokasi yang lebih baik untuk harimau-harimau itu menempis rasa takut seperahu dengan harimau sumatera yang nyaris punah ini.
