NOVI CLIMBS HIS FIRST TREE

The day is clear, several wild gibbons sing from the top of the forest canopy. Deer and mouse deer call back and forth to each other signifying that the night has passed.

A fly rises from the dung in the cage the keeper is hosing out.

Yes, today in the first day that a young orang-utan named Novi will start forest school. The door of her cage screeches as it opens and a keeper calls for Novi to leave the cage. Novi appears hesitant to approach the keeper however he coaxes her out with a glass of milk.

Finally, Novi climbs onto the keepers’ shoulder, still confused, Novi stays there as he walks along the narrow trail towards the forest school. “Welcome to the forest school Novi”, says another keeper who arrived previously at the forest school with other young orang-utans.

Novi appears frightened and confused as she tries to go higher, then dangles from a branch to look around, while biting a root and anything else which he can reach with his hands. Novi moves quickly from one branch to another, like he is trying to run away from the keeper. He grabs a rattan root and injures her hand. Finally Novi decides to return to the first branch where he dangled from.

After twenty minutes has past, Novi is brave enough to move away from the keeper, he moves quite quickly between small trees, twisting his body between small branches, again and again. Novi now appears happier.

His mouth does not seem to want to stop chewing leaves and rattan roots, however he doesn’t take his eyes off an insect which goes by. Novi is like a young child happily playing in a pond full of sweets.

Every now and again Novi appears confused, he goes quiet at the continuous sound of birds calling back and forth. She tries again to climb higher to find the bird, but unsurprisingly, once he is five steps in front of it, the bird screeches and flies far away from him.

Novi is one the orang-utans who have been successfully rescued from the Kongbeng area by the team from the Centre for Orang-utan Protection (COP). Novi was first found, malnourished in a space underneath a house with a chain tied around her neck. The chain, which for five years tortured his day and night still leaves a scar. His only friend at that time was the poacher’s dog.

After five years of suffering, finally Novi has another opportunity to return to the forest, he is now in COP Kalimantan along with fourteen other friends to return to school so that they can become complete orang-utans (NUS)

NOVI MEMANJAT POHON PERTAMANYA

(NUS)
