WHEN UNTUNG HIDING IN THE MIDDLE OF ORANGUTAN ISLAND
“Once again, Untung managed to make us upset!”, shouted Daniel, who was in charge of overseeing the orangutan’s pre-release island in East Kalimantan. After four days of not showing up at the feeding station, Untung acted up again. From morning until noon, Untung was nowhere to be seen by the monitoring team. The team even patrolled and circled the island repeatedly to find him.
Before being sent to the COP Borneo orangutan rehabilitation center, Untung was kept at the Mulawarman University Botanical Garden, Samarinda. A small and empty cage like a bird cage was where he used to live. At that time Little Untung always hugged himself to keep warm. He always hid her imperfect finger. “2011 was the first time we introduced Untung to climb a tree. Now, Untung looks forward to returning to his real home.”, said Daniek Hendarto, action manager of Center for Orangutan Protection.
It was already 16.30 and we had not found him, even though it was time for dinner. Feeling upset and anxious, the team finally decided to enter the island in search of Untung. Apparently, Untung was found enjoying his time playing alone on the island. All our fear losing immediately disappeared and turned into an instant resentment seeing Untung with mud all over his face and body. It appears that when he went missing Untung played on the muddy land inside the island and he looked very happy to be able to roll his body on the muddy ground.

UNTUNG MENGHILANG DI DALAM PULAU PRA RILIS ORANGUTAN
“Sekali lagi, Untung berhasil membuat kami kesal!”, teriak Daniel yang bertugas mengawasi pulau pra rilis orangutan di Kalimantan Timur ini. Setelah empat hari tidak muncul di tempat pemberian makan, Untung membuat ulah lagi. Dari pagi hingga siang hari, Untung tak terlihat sama sekali dari pantauan tim pos monitoring pulau. Bahkan tim patroli mengelilingi pulau berulang kali, untuk mencari keberadaan Untung.
Sebelum berada di pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo, Untung adalah orangutan yang berada di Kebun Raya Universitas Mulawarman, Samarinda. Kandang kecil kosong seperti kandang burung menjadi tempat tinggalnya. Saat itu Untung kecil selalu memeluk dirinya sendiri. Jari tak sempurnanya selalu disembunyikannya. “Tahun 2011 adalah tahun pertama kali kami memperkenalkan Untung untuk memanjat sebuah pohon. Kini, Untung menantikan hari kembalinya ke rumah sesungguhnya.”, ujar Daniek Hendarto, manajer Aksi Centre for Orangutan Protection.
Waktu sudah menunjukkan pukul 16.30 WITA dan kami belum menemukan Untung, padahal sudah waktunya untuk makan sore. Rasa kesal dan takut bercampur. Akhirnya tim memutuskan masuk ke dalam pulau untuk mencari Untung. Ternyata, ketika kami melakukan pencarian, Untung terlihat sedang asik bermain sendiri di dalam pulau. Ketakutan kami langsung hilang berubah menjadi kekesalan seketika saat melihat wajah dan badan Untung yang sangat kotor. Rupanya, Untung bermain tanah yang berlumpur di dalam pulau dan dia terlihat sangat senang sekali bisa mengguling-gulingkan badannya di tanah berlumpur tersebut.
