ORANGUTAN IN THE BANDUNG ZOO
This male orangutan was seen sitting on the grass. Cages without bars is a modern kind of cage recommended for
conservation institutions, it’s often known as enclosure. Generally, conditions of the Bandung Zoo enclosure was pretty good. There were one shelter in the form of gazebo that should be better if it was in the form of tree house to force orangutans to climb and train their muscles.
The enclosure area estimated to be around 15×15 meters equipped with 2 trap cages that’s enough for the orangutans when the enclosure must be cleaned regularly. Inside the trap cages was seen enrichment to entertain them whenever they’re inside the cage.
The information board was also quite communicative. There was also a prohibition to not to feed the animals. “It demands the visitors to be more disciplined in obeying the existing regulations.”, said Hery Susanto, coordinator of COP’s Anti Wildlife Crime unit. “Moreover, holiday season is coming soon which usually will increase the number of visitors with various backgrounds.”.
Unfortunately, the water inside the pond that surrounds the enclosure looked dry. The pond should be a distance between the orangutans and visitors besides the wall. So if there’s visitor trying to throw something, it can’t directly hit the orangutans. The water can be also used to drink for the orangutans whenever they are thirsty. (SAR)
ORANGUTAN DI KEBUN BINATANG BANDUNG
Orangutan jantan ini terlihat duduk-duduk di antara rerumputan. Kandang tanpa jeruji adalah kandang modern yang direkomendasikan untuk lembaga konservasi umum atau sering disebut juga enclosure. Secara umum, kondisi enclosure Kebun Binatang Bandung ini cukup baik. Ada satu tempat berteduh berbentuk gazebo yang seharusnya bisa lebih berbentuk rumah pohon yang bisa memaksa orangutan memanjat agar bisa melatih otot-otot tangannya.
Luas enclosure yang diperkirakan sekitar 15×15 meter dilengkapi dengan 2 buah kandang jebak cukup bisa mengatasi orangutan saat enclosure harus dibersihkan secara berkala. Di dalam kandang jebak sendiri terlihat enrichment untuk mengatasi kebosanan saat berada di kandang jebak.
Papan informasi juga cukup komunikatif. Tak lupa juga himbauan untuk tidak memberi makanan maupun minuman. “Ini menuntut para pengunjung untuk lebih disiplin mematuhi peraturan yang ada.”, ujar Hery Susanto, kordinator Anti Wildlife Crime COP. “Apalagi ini akan memasuki musim liburan yang biasanya akan terjadi peningkatan jumlah pengunjung dengan latar belakang yang berbagai macam.”.
Sayang air yang seharusnya mengelilingi enclosure terlihat kering. Kolam keliling itu seharusnya bisa menjadi jarak untuk orangutan dan pengunjung selain tembok. Sehingga jika ada pengunjung nakal yang melemparkan sesuatu ke orangutan tidak bisa langsung sampai pada orangutannya. Air itu juga bisa dimanfaatkan orangutan sebagai air minumnya saat dia kehausan.
