MARY ESCAPED!

Mary is an orangutan who just recently entered the Borneo COP orangutan rehabilitation center on February 12, 2019. Her small body doesn’t mean she can’t do anything. With her small body, Mary became so agile.

Agility that combined with courage. Where there is an opportunity to be free, she will take it. Getting out of the cage and being in a wide place to reach trees and hang seems like her dream. Maybe that’s what she always planned to do if the cage door was opened.

This morning was no exception. The health team prepared for the Orangutan Posyandu program, where small orangutans were measured and weighed and evaluated for their health. Of course Mary couldn’t be grouped with the others. She still needed to wait for the results from the laboratory about her health. Mary was in the last queue.

While waiting for a call, Mary was invited to the enclosure created by Angel’s orangutan volunteer team from Australia in 2016. Mary used this opportunity to run away and climb trees. The caregivers were made panic, running here and there. Milk and fruit to persuade her to come down were not heeded. Mary didn’t want to come down. Finally … Mary was picked up by force. One of the animal keepers was had to climb the tree and carry her down. (EBO)

MARY KABUR
Orangutan Mary adalah orangutan yang baru masuk ke pusat rehabilitasi orangutan COP Borneo pada 12 Pebruari 2019 yang lalu. Tubuhnya yang kecil bukan berarti dia tidak bisa apa-apa loh. Dengan tubuhnya yang kecil, Mary menjadi begitu lincah.

Kelincahannya juga disertai dengan nyalinya yang cukup besar. Dimana ada kesempatan untuk bebas, dia pasti memanfaatkannya. Keluar dari kandang dan berada di tempat yang luas untuk meraih pohon dan bergelantungan sepertinya mimpinya. Mungkin itu yang selalu direncanakannya jika pintu kandang dibuka.

Tak terkecuali pagi ini. Tim kesehatan bersiap untuk program Posyandu Orangutan, dimana orangutan-orangutan kecil diukur dan ditimbang lalu dievaluasi kesehatannya. Tentu saja Mary belum bisa digabungkan dengan yang lainnya. Dia masih menunggu hasil dari laboratorium tentang kesehatannya. Mary berada pada antrian terakhir.

Sambil menunggu panggilan, Mary diajak ke enclosure yang dibuat tim relawan orangutan Angel dari Australia tahun 2016 yang lalu. Kesempatan ini pun dimanfaatkan Mary untuk kabur dan memanjat pohon. Para pengasuh dibuat heboh, berlari kesana kemari. Susu dan buah untuk membujuknya turun pun tak diindahkannya. Mary tidak mau turun. Akhirnya… Mary dijemput paksa, salah satu animal keeper pun terpaksa manjat pohon dan menggendongnya turun.

SCHOOL VISIT TO SMAN 1 BANGUNTAPAN

A month has passed since the COP School Batch 9. Campus activities are busy, but it does not mean neglecting assignments, visits to schools. Alfikri, Aulia, Elsa, Wulan and Wildan together with DigiYouth #BhayPlastik and Gajahwong School shared their knowledge to SMAN 1 Banguntapan, Ngentak, Bantul, Yogyakarta. “Oops … back to school? Yes, but not in hisghscool uniform anymore. In the past I was in high school uniform but this time I came to share about orangutans.”, Alfikri said.

There were 53 students who had gathered in the school hall. Ms. Nurul Supriyanti who represented the Head of SMAN 1 Banguntapan appreciated this ‘school visit’ activity because it can enrich students’ knowledge. Wulan (COP School Batch 9) continued the session with information on animal welfare that can be assessed from animal stereotypic behavior. Furthermore, to avoid these behavioral aberrations, animals must be given enrichment.

Students were also invited to play the Kahoot! Game. There were nine questions about the material presented earlier. Who are the orangutans, what are the threats, and the results 68.06% of the questions are answered correctly. “Not bad …a two hour-session mixed with plastic hazard information, the insistent information can be digested by the students of SMAN 1 Banguntapan.”, Said Wulan relieved, after the school visit was over.

SCHOOL VISIT KE SMAN 1 BANGUNTAPAN

Sebulan sudah COP School Batch 9 berlalu. Aktivitas kampus juga padat-padatnya. Tapi tak berarti abai pada tugas, kunjungan ke sekolah-sekolah. Alfikri, Aulia, Elsa, Wulan dan Wildan bersama DigiYouth #BhayPlastik dan Sekolah Gajahwong berbagi pengetahuan ke SMAN 1 Banguntapan, Ngentak, Bantul, Yogyakarta. “Ups… balik lagi ke sekolah? Iya, tapi tidak dengan seragam sekolah lagi. Kalau dulu aku yang berseragam SMA kali ini aku datang untuk berbagi tentang orangutan.”, ujar Alfikri.

Ada 53 murid yang sudah berkumpul di aula sekolah. Ibu Nurul Supriyanti yang mewakili Kepala SMAN 1 Banguntapan mengapresiasi kegiatan ’school visit’ ini karena dapat menambah pengetahuan. Wulan (COP School Batch 9) melanjutkan informasi tentang kesejahteraan satwa yang bisa dinilai dari stereotypic behavior satwa. Selanjutnya untuk menghindari penyimpangan prilaku tersebut, satwa harus diberi ‘enrichment’.

Tak lupa, murid-murid diajak bermain game Kahoot!. Ada sembilan pertanyaan tentang materi yang disampaikan tadi. Siapakah orangutan, apa saja ancamannya dan hasilnya 68,06% pertanyaan dijawab dengan benar. “Not bad lah… dua jam penuh bercampur dengan informasi bahaya plastik, informasi yang bertubi-tubi tersebut bisa dicerna adik-adik SMAN 1 Banguntapan.”, kata Wulan lega, setelah school visit usai.

OPENING OF THE 3rd ART FOR ORANGUTAN

Finally, the artists talk about orangutans through their work. For the next four days, the 3rd Art For Orangutan will be held at the Jogja National Museum. There are 205 artists involved from all over the world. “I was surprised when I was called by the customs, related to the work of a French artist. But after the artist sent fees that we have to redeem, we could take the work to show it off.”, said Ramadhani from the Centre for Orangutan Protection.

The opening was enlivened by bands that were willing to perform at no cost. “It’s a charity event, we are happy to be able to take part. This is how we speak. #SawitBrengsek”.”, said Daniek Hendarto who is a vocalist for a punk band Miskin Porno. Besides Miskin Porno, the opening of Art For Orangutans also included Dirty Glass, Not A Woy, Tiger Paw, Since K.O., Martyl and Umar Haen.
“Those are the musicians who have repeatedly performed in the charity event held by Orangufriends. Orangufriends itself is an orangutan support group. They are volunteers who come from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Yogyakarta.”, added Ramadhani.

Not only that, Ridki R Sigit from Mongabay Indonesia and the Huhum Hambilly participated in the discussion on the first day. Announcement of Short Story Writing Contest with the theme “A Good Life for Orangutan” was also an awaited event. Dwi Asih Rahmawati won the first place with the title of “Opera Cinta Minah”, Fahmi Nurul Fikri won the second place with the title “Hoo the King” and “The Beauty of the Future” by Rania Thahirah won 3rd place.

Art For Orangutan, an exhibition across ages, genders, backgrounds, cultures and generations to promote love of orangutans as Indonesia’s proud animal.(EBO)

PEMBUKAAN ART FOR ORANGUTAN KE-3
Akhirnya, para seniman bersuara tentang orangutan lewat karyanya. Selama empat hari kedepan, Art For Orangutan ke-3 akan digelar di Jogja Nasional Museum. Ada 205 seniman yang terlibat dari seluruh dunia. “Sempat kaget saat dipanggil bea cukai, terkait karya dari seniman Perancis. Tapi setelah seniman mengirim biaya yang harus kami tebus, karya bisa kami ambil untuk dipajang.”, ujar Ramadhani dari Centre for Orangutan Protection.

Hari pertama pembukaan dimeriahkan band yang bersedia tampil tanpa biaya. “Namanya juga acara amal, kami senang bisa mengisi acara. Ini cara kami bersuara. #SawitBrengsek”, ujar Daniek Hendarto yang merupakan vokalis band punk Miskin Porno. Selain Miskin Porno, pembukaan Art For Orangutan juga diisi Dirty Glass, Not A Woy, Tiger Paw, Since K.O., Martyl dan Umar Haen.
“Mereka musisi yang sudah berulang kali mengisi acara amal yang diselenggarakan Orangufriends. Orangufriends sendiri merupakan kelompok pendukung orangutan. Mereka relawan yang datang dari Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung dan Yogyakarta sendiri.”, tambah Ramadhani.

Tak hanya itu, Ridki R Sigit dari Mongabay Indonesia dan Huhum Hambilly ikut mengisi diskusi hari pertama. Pengumuman Lomba Penulisan Cerita Pendek dengan tema “A Good Life for Orangutan” pun menjadi acara yang ditunggu-tunggu. Dwi Asih Rahmawati dengan judul Cerpen “Opera Cinta Minah” menjadi juara 1. “Hoo si Raja” yang merupakan karya Fahmi Nurul Fikri menempati juara kedua. “Indahnya Bumi Masa Depan” karya Rania Thahirah menyabet juara 3.

Menariknya lagi, di hari pertama ini, ada Live Screen Print dari Survive Garage dengan desain dari Anti Tank dan Sebtian. “Cukup dengan membawa satu kaos polos dan sablon di tempat. Cukup donasi Rp 20.000,00 saja.”.
