UPDATE ON KALUHARA’S CONDITION

The orangutan was seriously injured by a snare and shot with an air rifle, and blind in both eyes, and his condition continues to decline.
May 6, 2016 At 9:30AM Kaluhara went into shock with a temperature of 34 degrees celsius, a heart rate of 40 beats per minute, breathing rate of 6 breaths a minute, and a very weak pulse. We administered medicine to control this shock, and his vital signs then began to improve slightly, however at 10:50AM the orangutan stopped breathing. CPR was performed and his breathing returned. At the moment he is still in a critical condition, with conjunctivitis, cyanosis of the tongue (pale blue colouration indicating low blood oxygen levels), and hypersalivation. During this shock the orangutan also urinated.
Kaluhara is resting up, and we’ve opened up his airways so that he can receive additional oxygen. We are also keeping him on an IV drip, and keeping him warm with hot water.
As of this afternoon, our team has been forced to perform CPR 4 times.
Keep Kaluhara in your thoughts and prayers.

ONE MORE ORANGUTAN BECAME A VICTIM OF CONFLICT IN EAST BORNEO

Tuesday, May 3, 2016 Kutai National Park received information from local people of Kandolo village, Teluk Pandan, East Kutai that an orangutan was entangled nearby their village.
The veterinarian of APE Crusader team, Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) gave first aid to the wound on its left foot which was caused by the rope.
“We are currently doing an observation to watch the healing of its left ankle for the next 3 to 5 days to make sure if there is any dead tissue or infection. In order to quicken the tissue growing on the wound and to bring its body back to normal, we will provide medicines and vitamins.”, explained Vet Ade Fitria Alfiani, the veterinarian of APE Crusader team.
His right eye is already damaged and it could not function any more (old wound, no inflammation around the eye) and the sclera of the left eye is getting red-brown but it can still function.
Some wounds are found.
“The findings of this injured orangutan as a victim of human-wildlife conflict, and the bullet which is suspected to be air rifle bullet, prove that the conflict between human and wildlife in East Borneo is a serious matter.”.
