NOVI AND HIS MOST FAVORITE FRUIT

Novi, the male orangutan ex-rehab, often makes the monitoring team into chaos. After not being tracked for nearly two weeks after the release, Novi showed up his existence by hanging on a tree. Then the next two days the team lost his track again. Furthermore, two days later the team was surprised by Novi’s appearance around where the team saw him at the last time.

Novi continues to be seen swinging here and there in the Kenari tree (species of Sapindaceae or soapberry family). “Novi loves the Kenari very much,” said Yusak, one of our rangers who was filling out the orangutan food form. It can be proven by the form. From the early minutes Yusak noted, Novi ate a lot of Kenari fruits.

Apparently, Novi likes the sweet-sour taste of the fruit. The monitoring team also try Kenari fruit to fulfill their curiosity. Once there was a Kenari dropped by Novi from a 20-meters tree, someone rushed to pick it up. The first bite made Widi’s face shrink. “I thought it was sweet, but it is very sour,” said Widi, the APE Guardian team volunteer. No wonder why, Novi dropped the unripe fruit. This fruit looks like almonds with white flesh in it. If it is unripe, the skin color is green. But when it is ripe, the skin color turns black and the flavor is a little sweet.

Novi did not want to get away from Kenari trees. For several times Novi was observed making nests near that tree. “Maybe after waking up Novi will immediately eat Kenari,” thought the ranger. Apparently, the prediction went true. From 05.00 WITA the team monitored Novi, the orangutan came out from the nest. As soon as he woke up, he immediately rushed to swing towards the Kenari tree.

Rangers were optimistic that Novi could be an agent in regenerating forests, after finding that Novi’s feces are mixed with dozens of Kenari seeds, scattered far away from the main tree. (IND)

BUAH KENARI KESUKAAN NOVI

(REZ)

ORANGUTANS THREATENED BY SML

Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) suspects that the plantation business permit of SML in Batang Kawa sub-district, Lamandau district, Central Kalimantan is in the area of orangutan habitat. This is supported by the findings of orangutan nest right in the middle of the permit area for land clearing plan. It’s even strengthened by the survey conducted by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) in 2015, in the report entitled “Population Survey and Conservation Management of Orangutans in the Palm Oil Plantation of PT. SML” stated that there were 28 nests with 6 lines of transects along 8500 meters that the orangutan population is estimated at 0,23 individuals/km2 in the area of PT.SML

COP team found piles of logging and a road devide the forest and also a forest area that had been evicted for oil palm plantation plan belong to SML. In the area of the planned land clearing block, there was at least 4 nests found that was located only 200-500 meters away.

COP suspects that at least 10.000 hectares of forested area that had been cleared for oil palm plantation. COP hopes that the remaining areas of orangutan habitat should be rescued immediately by stopping all the land clearing process for oil palm plantation. Ramadhani, the manager of COP Habitat Protection said, “ We have to push SML to stop all activities that endangered the orangutans, also request the Ministry of Environment and Forestry as soon as possible to re-verify the permits of SML plantation area that is suspected in the orangutan habitat area.”

ORANGUTAN TERANCAM SML

THE CONFISCATED EAGLE FROM BANDUNG TRADERS IS FINALLY RELEASED

Do you still remember the arrest of a trader who sell 5 eagles in Nanjung Village, Margaasih, Bandung, West Java last March? The traders’ family terrorized APE Warrior team who helped and took care of the confiscated eagle.

Ary Bonong on August 16, 2018, was finally sentenced to 11 months in prison by the Bandung District Court. “Again the verdict is still far from the maximum punishment. Also, the punishment is still very far from the total loss that actually occurred”, said Hery Susanto, coordinator of COP Anti Wildlife Crime, with disappointment.

The confiscated eagle underwent rehabilitation at the Kamojang Eagle Conservation Center (PKEK). Seven months passed, one of the eagles from the Bandung trader was finally habituated for 30 days in the conservation area of Sancang Beach, Cibalong Garut. Iteung, the name of that white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) was finally released on November 20, 2018, by the vice-regent of Garut with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

“After a long process of rehabilitation, he finally found a way of freedom. Thank you PKEK for making his dream come true. Iteung flapped its wings again, free to return to the air”, said Daniek Hendarto, COP’s program manager of ex-situ conservation. “Don’t pet wild animals! Don’t sell protected wildlife!” added Daniek again. (IND)

ELANG SITAAN PEDAGANG BANDUNG, DILEPASLIARKAN

“Jangan pelihara satwa liar! Jangan jualan satwa liar yang dilindungi!”, tambah Daniek lagi.
