2016, WAY BACK HOME

2015 was remarkable! A great step was taken to bring the orangutans back to their natural habitat. It began as we were moving the orangutan from Samarinda to the new Rescue Center in Labanan Forest followed by preparation of pre-release process. An island is purchased for the pre-release with fund raised from the Sound for Orangutan concerts in Yogyakarta and Samarinda. The orangutans might not have to wait for a long time to be released back into their natural habitat this year.

This Rescue Center would also be a new hope for the orangutans which previously lived under a sorely bad upkeep.  Unyil is of such examples. He was raised in a small wooden crate placed in a toilet. As you read this report, Unyil is learning to be a wild orangutan in Forest School. He is learning to climb, to make a nest and to find natural foods.

This case is one of our reasons why we urgently have to fight against illegal wildlife trades. The trades could be stopped only when the law is strictly enforced. Prison is the best classroom for the traders to learn understanding the reason why the wildlife should not be traded. News in the media about law enforcement is the best way in educating the animal lovers that they should not think little of wildlife. This is why we work really hard together with the law enforcement officer pursuing the wildlife trader with the intention that the illegal upkeeps of orangutan could be stopped.

2015 was burning.  The El Nino phenomenon, land burning, and land-speculators’ effrontery has caused an outstanding breakdown. We have made a very well preparation. SOP was established and equipment was prepared. Simulations took place in order to anticipate the forest fire. Together with the local partners, we made a made a huge effort to stop the fire and ultimately securing the orangutans in Sungan Wain Protection Forest and Tanjung Puting National Park. The fire has narrowed the habitats of orangutans. Now the orangutans have to compete harder for living space and food. Conflict with the society becomes unavoidable. It means that our rescue team has to work even harder and the rescue center must always be ready to have new refugees.

It seems so difficult, but we are very optimistic that we will make it through, because we have you, the proud and militant Orangufriends. In addition, it is such a fortune for us to have new staffs that are young and highly dedicated. No question, because they are alumni from COP School. Bintang Dian Pertiwi will serve as the legal staff. Her job is to fight against wildlife crime. Ade Fitria Alfiani, this vet will join the APE Crusader Team. And the last is our new communication assistant, Zakia Kusumaningtyas who speaks English and German well. She will try and make effort to raise public support.

Meanwhile, we are continuously improving our Orangutan Rescue Center. Bawan Kecil Island is purchased and now it is a house for 7 orangutans before being released. We are currently working hard to raise fund for purchasing Bawan Besar Island and its surrounding land for pre-release program. There are a lot of things to do and having money is not an adequate solution. We have to run socialization and cooperate with the local society to ensure that all goes well. And once again, thank you for Orangufriends who had tirelessly raised fund so that the island and the boat is finally purchased.

There is also a sad story at the beginning of 2016. After almost a year working together with APE DEFENDER to run the Borneo Orangutan Reintroduction Center, the APE Crusader have to back to the road: to fight against the forest criminals. They will do investigations, documentations, and publish their findings to prompt the law enforcement. We are intended that this year would be a hard year for the forest and wildlife criminals. We have a readily well-done plan for it. All we need now is your support: the proud Orangufriends.

NEST IN PEACE JABRICK

JABRICK has had her ups & downs since coming to COP Borneo. If you remember in Feb 2015 JABRICK who was only 1yr old was stolen from her Mum at the time her Mum was killed. JABRICK was very skinny & weak and the ‘owners’ realised they did not know how to care for such a young baby and so surrendered her. JABRICK was severely malnourished as she had only been given condensed milk and because an orangutan baby in the wild can suckle from their Mother for up to 8yrs was also denied many antibodies normally absorbed from Mum’s colostrum.

When JABRICK first arrived it took many months to bring her health up but the COP Team did increase her health and although only a baby she was one of the top climbers in forest school and often would not come down at the end of the day. Then JABRICK, whose defenses (because of the reasons mentioned above) were low caught Malaria and got really sick. She was removed from the cages and put in the temporary clinic and was under the constant care of the COP Borneo vet. She was sick for quite a few weeks but then slowly recovered and went back to Forest School where she was the orangutan who would climb the highest and not want to come down each day, she was top of her class even though she was the baby of the group.

Two weeks ago she caught influenza so had to again be removed from the cages and was taken to the temporary clinic whilst I was there. She was kept warm and Dr Iman tried everything to get her to eat as she had lost her appetite. When she wouldn’t eat enough Jabrick was given intravenous food and was monitored 24hrs a day. A a big orange teddy bear was bought for her so she could cling to it in her little basket in the clinic while she slept. Her condition continued to weaken as she would not eat or drink and finding veins to intravenously feed became increasingly difficult. Sadly on 15th January she passed away. We are all absolutely devastated as she was one of our little champions. RIP Jabrick, we will never forget you.

For those who had adopted Jabrick please see the email we have sent you and reply to that email as we will not be replying to any comments in the comments box below as they are not able to be tracked. Thank you The devastated COP Team.
