AN ISLAND FOR MICHELLE
After a year of waiting in the quarantine cage, finally Michelle, a female orangutan from the Mulawarman University Botanical Garden in Samarinda (KRUS) will begin her independent life for the first time on the COP Borneo orangutan island. This island is the final stage of orangutan rehabilitation to stimulate the wild nature of orangutans.
Getting to know Icel (Michelle’s nickname) the spoiled one who has never been released from human care is a big concern. Can Icel survive a day … two days … or a week on the island? Plans A to C are always carefully monitored by the APE Defender team (the team responsible for orangutans when rehabilitated).
Until the day awaited, the day Michelle is transferred to the island arrived. “Transfer of Icel goes smoothly, thank God we don’t need to anesthetize her. Enough with fruit and milk. “Icel … this is your most important day, show that you can survive without humans! The forest is really waiting for you, “said vet Flora full of hope.
On the first day on the island, Icel seemed to dwell on the tower. Seems to occasionally hold a rope that connects one tower to a tree. But she chose to stay in the tower while eating fruits that were deliberately placed there. “Maybe our anxiety is similar to Icel’s fear to start the exploration. From across the island the team continued to take turns ensuring Icel is fine. ” (REZ)
PULAU ORANGUTAN UNTUK MICHELLE
Setelah setahun menunggu di kandang karantina, akhirnya Michelle, orangutan betina dari Kebun Raya Universitas Mulawarman Samarinda (KRUS) akan memulai kehidupan mandirinya untuk pertama kali di pulau orangutan COP Borneo. Pulau ini adalah tahapan akhir dari orangutan rehabilitasi untuk merangsang sifat liar dari orangutan.
Mengenal Icel (panggilan Michelle) si manja yang tak pernah lepas dari perawatan manusia ada kekawatiran besar, mampukah Icel bertahan sehari… dua hari… atau seminggu di pulau tersebut. Rencana A hingga C tak lepas dari pantauan tim APE Defender (tim yang bertanggung jawab pada orangutan saat direhabilitasi).
Hingga hari yang ditunggu, hari pemindahan Michelle ke pulau pun tiba. “Pemindahan Icel berjalan dengan lancar, syukurlah kita tidak perlu membiusnya. Cukup dengan buah dan susu. Icel… ini adalah hari terpentingmu, tunjukkan kalau kamu bisa bertahan hidup tanpa manusia! Hutan sesungguhnya menantimu.”, ujar drh. Flora penuh harapan.
Hari pertama di pulau, Icel terlihat banyak berdiam di atas menara. Tampak sesekali memegang tali yang menghubungkan satu menara dengan pohon. Tapi icel memilih berdiam di menara sambil makan buah-buahan yang sengaja ditaruh di situ. “Mungkin rasa was-was kami sama dengan rasa takut Icel untuk memulai penjelajahannya. Dari seberang pulau tim terus bergantian memastikan Icel baik-baik saja.”. (REZ)
