BONTI AND ANNIE ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT TO HANDLE IN ORANGUTAN POSYANDU

There are 6 small orangutans in the school forest. They are Owi, Bonti, Happi, Popi, Annie and Jojo. Their behaviour development are always being monitored through daily journal, including their physical development. Every month in the 2nd week, COP Borneo orangutan rehabilitation centre holds an “Orangutan Posyandu”. The small orangutans will be weighed and measured in height. Dental and overall health examination will also be carried out.

“It’s different from human children, who has mother and caretaker to answer precisely about their name, date of birth or their medical history. While orangutans, age determination can be made by examining and calculating their number of teeth,”, said drh. Felisitas Flora.

Among the 6 orangutans who attend the forest school, Bonti and Annie are the 4-5 years old orangutans. “The mischievous age”, Wety Rupiana, coordinator of the COP Borneo rehabilitation centre, interrupted. If other small orangutans are easily to be measured and examined, these two are not. Both of them are the most difficult to be taken to the Orangutan Posyandu. Neither did they want to extent their arms and legs to be measured. They also didn’t want to open their mouths at all. and they were always trying to escape.

There’s no other way to deal with the two orangutans, Bonti and Annie, to be examined. The most effective ways to make them open their mouth, that is tickling their armpits and neck, was no longer working for them. “Maybe they’re embarrassed because they are old…”, said Flora with laugh. (SAR)

(FLO)
