SCHOOL VISIT TO SMA NEGERI 1 BERAU
To commemorate International Primate Day, APE Guardian team of Centre for Orangutan Protection did a series of school visit. The first visit to SMA Negeri 1 Berau was the first school visit in Berau by COP team. Last Friday, August 31, about 100 of 10th grade students had gathered.
Through slideshows and short films, the team began introducing orangutans as one of the great apes that only exist in Indonesia, especially in Sumatera and Kalimantan island. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to share the knowledges at SMAN 1 Berau, among them who had never seen orangutan before and can not distinguish orangutans from other primates. We hope that its existence in Indonesia can make Indonesian proud.” said Ipeh, orangufriends who is volunteering in Kalimantan for the next three months.
The questions from students were no less suprising. It was simple and easy but quite difficult to answer. From “Why does the media concentrate less on orangutan deaths?”, “why was the punishment for orangutan killers so light?, to ” Does COP also educationg the companies that destroy orangutan habitat?”.
We were very happy and proud to see the students enthusiasm. ” We are very hopeful when we got questions from the SMAN 1 Berau students who are smart and critical. Indonesia orangutans and forests are increasingly threatened with endless conversion of forests. We hope the students can disseminate this chain of information, so that Indonesian young are more concerned about orangutans.” said Ipeh happily. (SAR)
SCHOOL VISIT KE SMA NEGERI 1 BERAU
Untuk memperingati Hari Primata Sedunia atau International Primate Day, tim APE Guardian Centre for Orangutan Protection melakukan serangkaian kunjungan ke sekolah yang sering disebut ‘School Visit’. Kunjungan pertama ke SMA Negeri 1 Berau adalah school visit pertama tim COP di kota Berau. Jumat, 31 Agustus yang lalu, sekitar 100 siswa dari kelas X sudah berkumpul.
Melalui slide dan film pendek, tim mulai memperkenalkan orangutan sebagai salah satu kera besar yang hanya ada di Indonesia khususnya pulau Sumatera dan Kalimantan. “Kami bersyukur berkesempatan berbagi di SMAN 1 Berau, di antara mereka ada yang belum pernah melihat orangutan serta belum bisa membedakan orangutan dengan primata lainnya. Kami berharap, keberadaan di Indonesia bisa menjadi spesies yang membanggakan Indonesia.”, ujar Ipeh, orangufriends yang menjadi relawan di Kalimantan untuk tiga bulan ke depan.
Pertanyaan para siswa tak kalah mengejutkan. Simpel atau mudah tapi cukup sulit untuk dijawab. Kenapa media sedikit sekali menyoroti kematian orangutan, kenapa hukuman untuk pelaku pembunuhan orangutan kecil sekali sampai pertanyaan apakah COP juga melakukan edukasi ke perusahaan-perusahaan pelaku perusakan habitat orangutan.
Kami sangat senang dan bangga melihat antusiasnya para siswa. “Besar sekali harapan kami saat mendapatkan pertanyaan dari para siswa SMAN 1 Berau yang cerdas dan kritis. Orangutan dan Hutan Indonesia semakin terancam dengan alih fungsi hutan yang tak berkesudahan. Kami berharap para siswa dapat menyebarkan informasi berantai ini, agar anak muda Indonesia semakin peduli dengan orangutan.”, kata Ipeh dengan senang. (RYN)
