COP IS NINE YEARS OLD
For nine years Centre for Orangutan Protection has been existing as a non-governmental organizations which is focus on orangutans and their habitat. It started from a concern of three founders about the ongoing rescue of orangutan from land clearing for oil palm plantations. “This is
like mopping the floor which is wet because the tap is leaking. We must fix the faucet, “said Hardi Baktiantoro year 2007.
Focus on working on orangutans and their habitat is the key to the existence of the COP. With the support from Orangufriends, COPs support group with no age and background limitary, which greatly assist the work of the COP. Their ideas are creative and incessantly make the event to raise moral as well as financial support. It becomes very unique, because everything is driven on their concern about the orangutan. “Who said that the Indonesian people do not care about orangutan? We care, but do not know what to do.”, Said Wahyuni in Sound For Orangutan, an annual charity music event organized by Orangufriends.
In the last five years, COP established a school for those who care about conservation and orangutans in particular. That is COP School. Students should pass the selection administration, and they will be given materials, assignments and discussions on line for a month. After passing the selection process, the students will learn about the main material in Yogya. Some of the speakers who have been involved were vet. COP BERUSIA SEMBILAN TAHUN
Sembilan tahun Centre for Orangutan Protection hadir sebagai lembaga swadaya masyarakat yang fokus pada orangutan dan habitatnya. Berawal dari keprihatinan tiga orang pendirinya, terhadap orangutan yang terus menerus diselamatkan dari pembukaan lahan perkebunan kelapa sawit. “Ini seperti mengepel lantai yang basah karena kerannya bocor. Kita harus memperbaiki keran itu.” ujar Hardi Baktiantoro ditahun 2007 (1 Maret).
Fokus bekerja pada orangutan dan habitatnya adalah kunci keberadaan COP. Dengan dukungan orangufriends yang merupakan kelompok pendukungnya yang tidak terbatas usia, latar belakang sangat membantu pekerjaan COP. Ide-ide orangufriends yang kreatif dan tak putus-putusnya membuat event untuk mengumpulkan dukungan moral maupun finansial. Ini menjadi sangat unik, karena semuanya digerakkan atas kepedulian mereka terhadap orangutan. “Siapa bilang orang Indonesia tidak peduli orangutan? Kita peduli, tapi tidak tahu bagaimana.”, jelas Wahyuni saat Sound For Orangutan merupakan acara musik amal tahunan yang dikoordinir orangufriends berlangsung.
Dalam lima tahun terakhir ini, COP menjalankan sekolahan untuk mereka yang peduli dunia konservasi khususnya orangutan. COP School namanya. Siswa melalui seleksi administrasi, lalu selama sebulan akan diberi materi, tugas dan diskusi secara online. Setelah lulus dari seleksi lanjutan itu, siswa kana mengikuti materi utama di Yogya. Beberapa pemateri yang selama ini terlibat adalah drh.
